Motorola used to sell those general purpose NPN and PNP transistors by
weight... it was too expensive to count them ;-)

I bet you don't have one of these ----: Toshiba MG240V1US41, 240 amp,
1700
volt, N channel IGBT, weighs 1 pound.

It's only a N channel on the input and that only drives the base or
bases of the actual bipolar transistor, which is the part handling all
that current and voltage.

So one must understand that the V(ce)saturation voltage isn't going to
be low as you would expect otherwise.

Jamie

Vce (sat) is 3.2 volts at 240 amps.

So what's that, about 750 watts of waste?

** With a Vce sat of 3.2V at 240amps, is way better than a high voltage mosfet.

Try to find a 1700V mosfet with an on resistance of 13 milliohms.

IGBTs have taken over in multi kW SMPS and motor drives because of this.

If you are switching 1700 volts at 240 amps, that's about 408000 watts. What
percentage is 750 out of 408K?

The 2N3904 will substitute for the 2N2222 in just about anything.
There's

Or 2N4401/ 4403 for pnp.

Somehow I fell into liking the 2N3904 / 2N3906 pair -- I don't know why,
and at this late date I can't justify it.

(Actually, when I'm prototyping with through-hole parts I have a small jar
marked NPN and another one marked PNP. 9 times out of 10 I just shake one
out of the jar, plug it in, and it works. The tenth time I actually have
to select something specific.)
Grin, Most of the time if I use a transistor it's go an opamp wrapped around it.
I've used the 3904/06 pairs too, but at one time I had issues with the 3904's doing some HF oscillation/ ringing..
I added Ferrite beads some more base R, waved a dead chicken over the circuit and it worked.
I found the 2n4401 worked just as well, and didn't need the dead chicken. :^)

These days if there's a transistor in one of my circuits, it's almost
always a dual or prebiased, it's in the smallest package that I feel up to
dealing with, and I just look for what's available on DigiKey.
