Your email didn't ring a bell in Myspace, and I am not going to
search the entire Internet to find a picture of you.

So unless you can produce a picture of yourself, how the hell am I
supposed to know if you're Mark Henry, the World's Strongest Man who
deadlifted 903 pounds or Sitre Magana, the World's Fattest Man who
deadlifted 903 doughnuts?

I can assume that you might not have anything to worry about, as many
average size men can push Sitre Magana's fat ass around, and he's
487 pounds not including the weight of the wheelchair.
And the question has nothing whatthefucksoever to do with home repair,
electronics repair, pet rats, autism or sports-entertainment.

I need to get it in my house, so I can make a future post about
drilling it into my floor. SOmeone in here confirmed my belief that it
will become old hat and a novelty real quickly--so I am going to get a
small one that I can life with one arm, because I don't have expensive
jewelry. I can use it to divert burglars and to waste their time and
keep them occupied, so as they don't come accross other kinds of
valuables that will do them well to steal; like the proprietary lease
to my apartment, my book I'm writing, my ATM card.

I'm trying to fix this antique black and white tv.
There's a part in the tv that says .001 uufd on it. On the other side
it looks like a domino with 6 colored dots. The dots are different
colors, the thing is rectangular with a wire on each end. It is about
1 inch long a half inch wide and 1/8 inch thick. Flat package. I
know it's not a chip or power transistor becaue this is a tube tv set.
It dont look like a resistor. Capacitors are usually labelled MFD
(microfarad). What the heck is uufd?
Marking standards were all over the map in the early days. MFD would
have been MicroFarads, but by todays standards a capital "M" would
indicate MegaFarads, which is an unlikely size...

MMF or MMFD usually indicated MicroMicroFarads, which today we call
PicoFarads. I do not recall having seen uufd, but by description it
is almost certainly .001 MicroFarads (1000 PicoFarads), probably
silver mica and they don't usually go bad unless badly abused.

The "dominoes" were an early molded packaging scheme that isn't used
anymore. Usually red or brown and the dots color code for value.

Another thing. I notice corrosion around one of the filter caps. I
bet it's leaking. It's a metal can about 4 inches tall, 1.5 inches in
diameter, and it has 3 leads on the bottom. (3 caps in one can)
It reads:
80mfd 600v
10mfd 450v
40mfd 450v
Where can I get a replacement?
Many of these multi-section electrolytics were made to order, and almost
no one does things this way anymore. Try Antique Electronics Supply for
some similar generic parts. There used to be a couple companies that
would repack the original cans for a hefty fee. If you just want to get
it to play, you can figure a way to mount three individual caps of
similar value.

I get nothing on the screen, but there is a loud hum coming from the
speaker, which happens to be a the weirdest speaker I ever saw. It's
got a coil where there would normally be a magnet and an extra set of
wires going to the chassis. No parts look burned.
Some early makers used an electromagnet (the extra coil), which may
also do double duty as a supply filter inductor, and when the filter
caps get bad they hum quite a bit. Almost everyone eventually settled
on the permanent magnet setup to simplify wiring, replacement, etc.

IMHO Usenet would be well served by a conversion to auto-moderation

Any good quality off brands that would do the trick?
I use Fluke meters in the field because they're pretty "bullet-proof" re.
their cases. Bit when I wanted something with more functions for the bench, I
didn't need something quite so stout.

I bought an Extech EX330:

<http://www.extech.com/instrument/products/alpha/ex330.html>

It's got capacitance and frequency measurement as well as temperature
measurement. (Mine came with a bead-type probe but I see some EX330 meters
that are not bundled with a probe. Look closely.) I think I paid about $50.

Jameco has a good selection:

<http://www.jameco.com>

I still think there's nothing like a Fluke but the competition is closing in
on them very quickly.

(I cross-posted to the s.e.repair group. I think these guys n' gals would be
able to give some good experiences re. meters.)

Good luck,

The biggest drawback I've found to the Extech meters is that they are
very slow to auto range (in every mode) compared to a Fluke. Also, while
hunting for the right range they display bogus values in the other ranges.
My Fluke 10 takes about 0.5s to go from Megaohms down to ohms and displays
dashes while it's doing that. My EX470 takes 4+ seconds and displays
some intermediate values. After it reaches ohms it takes another second
or so to settle.

I've been hammering away at this megatoad for years, and have
recently been having some success. The IPs are real; his IP is
frontier.net, which recently bought out epix.net of Dallas, PA.

This idiot's too stupid to know anything about spoofing IPs or
anything remotely resembling a spambot. He pecks away on his thrift
store PII, one message at a time, in "goo goo groopz", hoping to sell
some of the trash he scooped out of the dumpster in front of his run
down "resort" in the toxic coal mining region of NE Pennsylvania.
However, his output of these annoying spamgrams hit 30 and up to 60 a
day at times, but my technique has gotten 26 of his Google accounts
banned for spamming, and now Frontier.net is up his ass for the same
offense.

Do some research on this toad Charlie Nudo...you'll find him
laughable.
