Toshiba TV29C90 problem; Image fades to black...

Whick model/brand?

Depending the brand/model there could be several problems for the fault.

If a idler wheel is placed in the vcr then this is one of the parts together
with the belts and the pinchroller to suspect. Also the mode-select-switch
could be the problem.

If you open the vcr and look at the deck, you probably can see where a belt
or a wheel or the idler makes the problem.

How does one fix a VCR that eats tapes. I know the problem is
mechinical, but how in the heck do I test the thing? Do I need to
purchase a gross of blank tapes for the machine to eat while I repair
it? Or, does someone make an unbreakable tape to use for testing?

Either purchase a commercially available clear plastic "dummy" test cartridge,
or fabricate your own from an unwanted tape. To make, disassemble a cartridge,
remove and discard the two reels & tape, cover the two end sensor holes from the
inside with black tape, remove the clear plastic tops, then reassemble. To use,
simply load the blank cartridge and carefully watch for anything unusual as the
tape loads, cycles thru play, ff, rew, ejects etc.

Just my two cents:
Is there a Dallas chip on the mobo? Black cube, dual inline,
print "Dallas" or "Odin" - sorry, don't remember the numbers.
AFAIR it is a clock with battery chip. I always wondered, who
ever got the brilliant idea to implement a battery into a chip
and then solder that to the board.
If there is, try to replace that. Estimated lifetime was about
ten years imho.

I've seen DS1287 in an 8086, and a DS12887A in a 286. Probably
different for a Pentium.

He says it runs at top speed on 115 VAC. I assume by this it doesn't smoke.
Thus, the cord is probably correct for the motor. It's quite possible for
a motor rated at 32 VDC to operate on 115 VAC due to its inductance limiting
current.

What I would ask is for the original poster to draw a diagram of the wiring.
That would help a lot more than speculating on how it might have been
incorrectly wired years ago (which IS possible but let's start with the
basics!).

No, just wind the eaten tape back in and reuse it for testing. Try not to
allow the damaged part to contact the heads, you may need to wind the tape
on by hand to achieve this.

Open the VCR, insert a tape and watch very carefully what happens. When it
laces up, make sure it does so cleanly. Press play, does the tape get drawn
through the pinch roller/capstan properly, or does it ride up and crease? Is
the take up spool (the right side tape spool) rotating? These are the first
things to check. If the pinch roller seems to cause the fault, clean it
thoroughly by hand (a head cleaning tape is no good). If the take up spool
is sticking check clutch/belt/idler. Eject the tape. Prior to the tape
starting the eject, the spool should rotate and wind the tape back in as it
unlaces, does this happen?

On the very scant info you give, it is impossible to be more specific. Post
the make, model number and your diagnostic findings and the chances are
someone in the group will lead you straight to the fault.

The actual TVs and VCRs will still work, as there will (hopefully) be
digital STB convertors with analog outputs cpmatible with old analog
TVs.
Except that you will not get hi-definition resolutions on your NTSC or Pal
TV set. The set-top convertors will change the video stream to NTSC(or
PAL),hopefully with as few artifacts as possible, and letterboxing. But you
will have a nice noise-free signal, until it drops out completely or
'freeze-frames'.Just like Direct TV.

The day digital TV is all that can be had is the day I stop watching TV

From what I understand, the FCC plans to keep broadcasting NTSC TV until the
percentage of digital TV ownership reaches some certain point I can't
recall.ISTR 80%;but no guarantees on that figure, nor do I know how they
plan to determine the level of digital ownership.Census???

This old Hitachi CU-100 is a sturdy, steel cab portable
TV, 12Volt capable, worth saving. Tuner had bad mech. defect,
I replaced with a similar but newer unit, and the set works
ok.
The replacement tuner has a connecion for AFC, the old
one didn't. I left it unconnected. I wonder if there is a
better treatment for this? Tuning must be corrected at each
turn-on, and often when switching channels. I wonder if I
could improve on this by biasing the connection, or
grounding thru a cap, or possibly adding a transistor
driven by AGC to simulate AFC. Anyone remember this far
back? :)

The complaint on this set was that sometimes it would work for a brief
time and then sometimes it would stay on for around 20 minutes. I
resoldered anything that looked suspicious and tried it. It will power
up and after about 10 seconds the picture will shrink in from all 4
sides and the set will quit. There is hardly enough time to decide
what to look at before this occurs. Does anyone have any information
on this set with this symptom? Thanks, Lenny Stein, Barlen

Well, if anyone has a Sony SL-HF1000, SL-HF2100, SL-HF900, SL-HF750, or

The default settings will result in needing to completely align the unit,
which you seem to need to do anyway. If you don't understand how to align
this set any better than you seem to from this post you should take it to an
experienced Mitsubishi tech.

If you want specific help you need to post some specific information, like
how is the picture messed up or which parameters you fiddled with.
Regardless, I doubt that help online will be much assistance in this case.

Hello, I was trying to change the settings in the advanced menu screen
(technician's screen). Unfortunetly, I messed up the settings and I
forgot to write down the initial settings. If anyone has a Mitsubishi
VS-4543, I would be very grateful if you could please post the default
settings for the "CONV GEO" subscreen. To get to this, you have to
press "MENU" then 2357 and press the "AUDIO" button until you get to
the "CONV GEO" screen. Once you are there, please press "VIDEO" to go
through all of the settings and write down all of the default numbers
to the right of the 3 or 4 letter abbreviation. Thanks in advance!

Marcin,

My customer doesn't care about NICAM sound. He only want ANY sound, since he
is able to recieve the picture perfect.
I'll try to modify the sound de-mods. to operate at 6 Mhz instead of 5.5
Mhz, changing ceramic filters and so on.

Any additional advice is always welcome,

Regards
Stefan

I closed my shop about 3 years ago so I don't have the latest service
manuals. My sister in law has a Philips 36PT41B1 tv that keeps shutting
down on her. She says the front power LED will flicker on/off at random
when it is in shutdown. If she turns it off via the front power button
sometimes it will turn right back on and other times it has to be
unplugged
for a minute or two before it will turn on. It sounds like a heat
intermittent or a cold solder joint to me. Anyone know of any known
problems with this model/chassis? Anyone have a schematic they would
share
with me? She lives about 7 hours away and I told her I would look at it
next week when I come down for the birth of my first grandchild. Any help
would be appreciated. Here is what she gave me over the phone:

Fatal Radiation ? From a DVD player, what was powering the thing, Uranium ?

americanfamilyagent207@livewire.com wrote:
From the Livewire Newsfeed

August 4, 2003

A New Mexico family was killed by a DVD player last Friday.
Authorities reported that it appeared that the DVD player had just
been purchased. Apparently an accident caused the player to fall off
the television set in their living room. It is suspected that the
family cat possibly knocked it down. The plastic case of the DVD
player became cracked during the fall to the floor, emitting the fatal
radiation which killed the entire family of seven.

Authorities were notified on Saturday when a relative came to visit
and found the family car in the driveway and no one would answer the
door. When the police arrived they used forced entry and were shocked
at what they found. There were dead bodies laying all over the living
room floor, including the husband, wife and five children. None of
them showed any signs of physical abuse, and all other possibile
causes of death have been ruled out. Authorities are positive the
deaths were caused by the DVD player.

Additionally, the first officer to enter the premises was struck down
and affected by the harmful radiation, and is hospitalized in critical
condition. The electric company was summoned and disconnected the
power to the premises before further action could be taken.

A cat was found laying right next to the fatal DVD player, which leads
to the suspicion that the cat was the cause of the player falling off
of the television.

Names of the family members are being withheld until further
investigation and notification of relatives of the deceased.
Funeral arrangements will be announced shortly.
