It's 'cause this is where the smart people hang out after work.
Conceptually, it's kinda like a pub, and peolple like to do other stuff
than talk shop.

It would be a lot different if we were actually buying each other
rounds of beer.

John

would it degenerate into name-calling quicker or slower if beer were
involved?
Physical presence makes things very different. People get a lot
nastier when they're in cars or on the Internet.

True. When the guy you are abusing is within arms reach, ones mouth
tends to stay shut - either voluntarily or due to swelling :)

Ironically, this is also the venue of the majority of nose-picking.

Guess that makes sense... I prefer less politics/insults though - giving me
more time for the pub ;-)

Definitely! I like the concept...
And I think people are right: The tone would be less primitive when no one
could hide behind the wire ;) (I belive in the good inman - and there can't
be that many /really/ needing basic manners or even psyciatric help)

When someone insists on posting his grade-school-level insults to
someone who he knows has him killfiled, it isn't a surprise to see
other mental deficiencies as well.

Exactly. Some minimal personal distance is apparently needed to switch
on civility. It probably evolved from a sword's or a club's reach.

Usually its considered rather good fun to stick those "I am a twat"
stickers on someone's back, such that the fool has no idea that we all
laughing at him.

So, "Macon is a twat".
