My news server is getting intermittent and only posts when it wants to.
Just wanted to see if it is working today.

Didn't work yesterday. Wondering if it works today. It's a free news
server, so I can't complain too much.

You weren't kidding! O.O

I went to http://freenews.netfront.net/ and my browser is STILL waiting for it to load.

Why not just use groups.google.com?

Google is hard to read. I like Outlook Express which works like email and I
can mark and see just the topics and new messages I want. And it's a lot
faster than Google. But I might have to sign up for a Giganews Pearl account
for $5 a month.

It may be difficult to learn, but the price is right - free :p

Plus, you can access the messages from anywhere - your phone, this computer, that computer...

Do you have the details of how to setup astraweb to work with Outlook
Express? I didn't see any server IDs on the website. The first thing they
ask for is my credit card number and there are some notes about logging in
and asking questions later.

Why not test by posting some electronics?

Hi Phil, Hey I've been reading Bracewell's Fourier Transform book.
I'm somewhere in chapter 8 (hte two domains)... I'm not doing any
of the problems. But so far the book is a gem! I needed it back in
grad school. The first six chapters are a wonderful review, summary,
with an abundance of pictures and graphs.

Yup, great book. Glad you're enjoying it. Bracewell's Fourier class
and Widrow's DSP class are the only straight EE classes I've taken.
(Lasers and nonlinear optics were taught out of the EE department, but
they don't count.)

They were good choices.

Cheers

Well, I was thinking about basic physics and why the speed of light is what
it is. Why does light travel at 186K miles per second instead of 187K miles
per second?

"Why does light travel at 186K miles per second instead of 187K miles
per second? "

Well there are two possibilities. Either we made the miles too big or the seconds too long.

I think that was kinda what the metric system tried to do.

The only advantage to the English system is division by three. That actually pretty rare. But when the opportunity arises, use it. Build a six sided structure.

But in most things, metric is better. The inability to accurately divide by three is not a big deal and comes up very rarely.

Yes, light moves at 982 million feet per second. Who's stupid idea was that?
Why not make it exactly 1 billion feet per second, or exactly 1 nanosecond
per foot?

Nah, it's all based on astronomy. One attoparsec equals one decifoot, to within experimental error. ;)
