I thought it was a coal distillate, coke oven byproduct.
Naptha is a range of hydrocarbons that are generally just lighter than
gasoline. They can be made from oil, coal, or natural gas.

The classical source for naphtha is white gas, i.e. butane plus various
pentane and hexane isomers that condense from natural gas.

A lot of solvents will take off the impure hydrocarbons in tar.
Mineral oil (baby oil), waterless hand cleaner, and (preferably
odorless) paint thinners of the flammable kind. Maybe other
stuff, too (did you try liquid soap?).

Each less than 1 mm. Maybe 0.3 mm. I tried using my finger nail to get
the biggest one off, but no effect. Paint thinner? ?? Forget it?

I finally tried (Sunyside) paint remover today. Worked like a charm.
