Unplug/replug all power and data connections. That way, the errant
loose one will be fixed and your problem will be resolved.

Thank you for the tip. I did this, but no luck.

A couple interesting new developments: one one occasion when it
wouldn't start, holding down the power button kept the PC on, for as
long as I held it. That made me wonder if it was the switch, but the
effect was never repeated. Another time it wouldn't start, and I
disconnected all the devices but the hard drive, and then it started.
Yet other times I have disconnected every single device, and the fan
won't even spin and try to start.

Strange...

Thank you! I appreciate the helpers among the trolls. :)
Clear the BIOS and then re-input the parameters.

Is that a problem that you would characterize as economically
repairable on a 5 hp motor?
I have had experience with a motor with a bad squirrel cage ! It ran a
little rough and was way down in torque. It also got a lot hotter than
it normally did.

I tried to solder the copper bars, two of them, where they had cracked
at the end. A waste of time ! A new rotor cured the problem, curtesy
of Brook Motors.

After all that waffle and piffle, you never even once conidered removing the
fucking DVD drive. Right?

Wow, you're quick to jump to conclusions. If you read the post, you'll
notice that:

"...I've tried replacing the power supply, and I've tried removing all

Might as well try taking the RAM and putting em back in different slots.
Chip creep & all that...

So yes, of course I removed the DVD drive. Logically, the first thing
to try...
I'd fuck around in the BIOS...but then I like to fuck around in the BIOS.
Post the model # of you DVD drive.
Need more info.

But this piece of advice does not mean that you venture out and wear
purple socks or shoes to match your purple shirt. It will smack of
being cheap and flashy. Avoid purple shoes and any kind of purple
dresses which are the same color from top to bottom. Too much of
purple makes you look exactly the opposite of what you want to appear
as. Purple should be used selectively with a certain angle to give a
hint of nattiness without seeming to be flashy.

You didn't say how old the PC is. It might be the onboard battery.
First, try to reseat it; if that doesn't help, I'd try replacing it w.
a new one. Also, check carefully that the MB is not occasionally
shorting out to the chassis (that all insulating spacers are in place).

Interestingly, trying to turn the machine back on does nothing.
HOWEVER...if I physically unplug the PC, and leave it off for a few
seconds, I then *can* reboot it. Looking inside the case, I notice a
green LED. When this goes out (after unplugging) it signals that I can
now successfully reboot. If I try to reboot before the light goes out
(about a 2 second wait) the reboot fails. I'm assuming the LED is
showing power remaining on the motherboard due to capacitors. I don't
know if that's a hint towards a solution?

Also, when I reboot, most (but not all) of the time the bios has been
reset as well.

Now the questions I've got are:
1) Why? I've installed drives dozens of times, and never had anything
like this.
2) How do I fix it? Presumably a new motherboard will do the trick,
though I'd like to a) confirm that's the cause and b) fix the existing
MB, if at all possible. (Historically, every time I've tried to
replace a MB I've ended up having to replace the entire PC. Apparently
my skills don't lie in that direction!)

Is there any chance I can salvage this board? I have no idea if
replacing the onboard battery, flashing the bios, or any of these
arcane things will do anything to help, or if it's physically broken
and needs a part replaced? A electrician friend tells me he thinks a
capacitor may have gone, but looking at the MB, none of them appear to
be swollen or leaking.

thanks a lot! any advice is appreciated!

I put a drop of oil into its sleeve bearing and it now runs
reliably - almost. It will start every time as long as it is
not oriented with the open 'face' down. (The open face is the

down, it sometimes starts and sometimes needs a slight nudge to
get it going.

What's going on? How come? TIA
What voltage are you applying to it?

I'd be utterly amazed if any charger said to have a maximum output of

That IS somewhat of a stretch but not totally impossible. The max.
current output shown is at the rated voltage. So, for instance, a
device rated at 1.5A, 12V should supply 12V up to the rated current load
of 1.5A (or somewhere close). If you continue to increase the load,
the amperage may increase beyond 1.5A......as the supplied voltage
drops below 12V.
It would be a strange power supply that allowed that. Although it might be
possible with different tappings on a transformer.

If you put the ammeter straight across it, shorting the output of the
charger, it would not surprise me at all if it managed 4-6A, obviously this
is not a useful measurement and it wouldn't take long for it to overheat
though.

I think that's the point. The OP didn't specify under what conditions
he did his measurements. The ratings on any piece of equipment are only
valid under the conditions specified. IOW, 1 amp @ 12 volts, 'might'
supply 4 amps, but perhaps not at 12 volts...and probably not for long!

My impression is that the OP is not very technically competent and that
he is being 'penny wise and pound foolish'...buying a very expensive
battery and trying to cheap-out on the charger.

If he had the chops to analyze his situation, he could probably build a
charger which would be relatively inexpensive and safe; but he hasn't
shown that capacity.

Most likely. As the contacts are not replaceable you need to find an

Would any SPST switch with an adequate voltage/current rating suffice
(presuming it fits where the old one did)?

Where did you get this diagram. Is it completely from scratch ?

Greg:

No, it was copied, carefully, from the original schematic. I would
have scanned the original schematic, but it is very fuzzy. I did
check my schematic against the other channel's schematic, which was a
bit clearer but did not have the expected voltages indicated, and was
cluttered with the actual component values.

I have checked, re-checked, and RE-checked the accuracy of my hand-
drawn schematic, comparing it to the original, and there are no
mistakes.

The emitter of Q204 has a strange DC path. The amplifier appears
non inverting. What is the voltage on Q204 collector ?

greg
Q204 is in a pretty simple DC feedback path with Q205 and the 207/8
combination. Its emitter currrent flows down through Q208 to ground.

The amplifier is non-inverting from the base of Q204, but inverting from
its emitter, which is where both the DC and AC feedback end up.

I have a 10 year old 32" Magnavox that pincushions intermittently.

If you smack the housing it usually has an effect on the condition so
I suspect a connector or other hardware problem.

Before I actually tackle taking this 200 pound TV apart I thought I'd
ask for specific locations that may be suspect in the horizontal sweep
section of the TV. Any suggestions?

And I would actually pick it up, recondition it and walk away with a
75%+ profit margin. I still sell a lot of used typewriters and still
get a lot of them in for repairs.

At any of the thrift stores around here, I wouldn't give more than three
dollars for any kinds of typewriters (not nowadays, anyway) no matter
how ''good'' such and such a typewriter is supposed to be.

Follow up:

Moved the heavy TV to a work bench and removed the cover.
Very dusty. Vacuumed as much as possible. Will blow off the rest
outside tomorrow. Prodded with fiberglass rod and found a sensitive
area of the main board. Turned lights off and could just see a very
weak spark that seemed to correspond to the intermittent
pincushioning. The spark emanates from a hole in the circuit board
where a diode lead goes through to the trace side. The diode is within
the horizontal sweep section. Will get to the trace side of board
tomorrow and hopefully will just have to re-solder the diode.

I love cheap fixes. To bad I scratched the heavy duty TV stand in the
process of trying to move the beast.
