Slow Sun Ultra 45 graphics driving me mad!!

Guest
Hi all,

We have purchased a new Sun workstation - an Ultra 45 machine on which
I am running Cadence 5.0. For some reason the graphics performance on
schematics and layouts is shockingly bad - for example:

- in a schematic/layout to scroll around you have to wait a couple of
seconds every time you move for the graphics to do anything
- again in a schematic/layout it takes a few seconds before a zoom
command does anything on the screen.
- in a layout if you zoom to different levels the hatching of the
drawn layers sometimes completely disappears - hence you cannot see
what is there or not there.

As you can imagine with a tapeout deadline fast approaching this is
driving me mad. I have tried running a remote x server on my windows
client (connecting to the same Sun machine) and the graphics work fine,
as you would expect.

Any suggestions would be welcome,

Reuben

My first question is: what graphics card does the Sun system have?

Amazingly, after a month of the Sun technical support trying to solve
the problem, they managed it a day after I posted on this forum. The
graphics card was the XVR-100 and the patch they sent which fixed the
problem was T118712-12.

I hope this helps other people, as it was incredibly frustrating to
have to wait a few seconds after every move/scroll/zoom command.

I wish I could say that this was case for us. We have Ultra 45s with
the xvr-2500 video card and they are dog slow with Allegro. Tried the
patch for the xvr-100 just for grins but it had no effect. It seems
better if we run an older version of Allegro but with the latest
version...useless.

I used to work on Sun workstations from time to time and I remember
that I had to do something with the framebuffer on some of the
machines to get them to run better. I did some googling on the card
name and framebuffer and in the end I got the proper application and
instructions. Unfortunately, I didn't take exact notes what I did so I
can't be of much further help.
