Scope scale illuminator bulbs

Scale illumination lamps blown. Anyone ever tried droppered blue or white
LEDs for such purposes. Would probably require a reflector on the LED
lighting axis to throw light off radially.

Yes - but you have both the colour problem (nasty hues) and the fact they
tend to be a near point source as opposed to the tubular tungsten ones
normally used.
I got fed up of constantly replacing those on a series of PPMs and fitted
small fluorescents. Of course this wouldn't be practical on most domestic
meters.

An idea from IRLEDs which are available with wide angle radiation pattern -
and have virtually flat lens instead of domed, you could flatten the end of
some white LEDs (taking care not to cut too deep and take out the bond
wire!) using a medium rough emery paper will leave a diffuser lens end.

Or you could use SMD type that give light of the top. They would be
small enough to fit the right way round in the space used by a #67 bulb
commonly used for the grid illumination.
