"save as"

how about web pages that bookmark themselves
as "home page" or "welcome" or "products and solutions"?
John Larkin
Fascinating that someone, upon placing a page on the Web,
wouldn't Google it to see how it gets listed.
I especially like the ones
where somebody used a template in their editing package
or used someone else's page as a boilerplate--and didn't redo the title.

I rarely allow the default title of a page to be entered as a bookmark.
I edit it so that it conforms to my other listings
and so that it means something to me when I come back to it.

Agilent's semiconductor-site bookmarks include a user-session ID, so
they evaporate as soon as you exit the site. Smart!
Maybe. They probably don't wan't anyone bookmarking individual pages,
forcing you to go back in through the front end of their search engine
each time. So you get a unique ID. But its not
difficult to generate a URL in the form:

....597695969332879224376031/AD8221_a.pdf

Most browsers will slice off the path and prompt you to save just the
file name.

I guess I should be grateful that "AD8221" appears somewhere in the
string at all.

Those leading digits are probably YOUR tracking number ;-)

Or the price. ;-)

Or the delivery date.

Nope... that's the MOQ.
Number of styrofoam packing peanuts required to ship one unit.

Trust the computer industry to shorten the term "Year 2000" to Y2K.

Netscape 7. If I right-click the link, I get the silly ADI filename in
the save window, but if I try to save from within Acrobat I get the
*.pdf, as you do.

As long as I'm bitching, how about web pages that bookmark themselves
as "home page" or "welcome" or "products and solutions"?
Real shit. I tend to bookmark them and then rename the bookmark with a easier
name , then to sort them by type for easy access with some keystrokes (ALT+F to
pop-up the Favorites menu under IE6, then use the arrow keys).

About 15 or 20 years ago, I was working in Irvine, CA, and Arrow,
Future, Newark, Hall-Mark, and some others whose names I can't
remember, all had local reps just around the corner, and they'd
happily let people (i.e. me) go through their document room. I
had whole bookshelves full of data books. One time I went to
the local Futaba shop and got the spec on the servos from one
of the techs.

Now, THOSE were the days!

Hey, when I was a kid, we used to take the bus to the airport and
they'd let us hang out in the control tower.

Yeah,
It has been about 4 years since I last did a databook run down the
street. But, just a few months ago, the PTB decided we didn't really
need our library space anymore, or our test lab, so we took as many
databooks and manuals that we could fit into a 6x6 cube, as well as all
the floppies and CDs for earlier versions of the software. Sent about 6
55 gallon trash cans of databooks to the dumpster...

It didn't help that at the same time, my old boss, who was an inveterate
packrat, was also moving from his oversized office to his new, smaller
home office, and was clearing out 6 years of accumulated books, docs,
magazines, you name it!
