"save as"

OK, I want to save an AD8221 datasheet, so Analog Devices provides the
"save as" file name as...

597695969332879224376031AD8221_a.pdf

I guess I should be grateful that "AD8221" appears somewhere in the
string at all.

That is an unusual number. I think a tracking number would be more
along the lines of a UUID, but you never know what/how they coded
that one. I've seen sites with directories named with UUIDs used to
store documents and/or images for a given topic and of course the
documents themselves may be coded with a number index so that the
info can be found in a database later, say if the part number
changed after a merger or whatever.

Anyway, if this helps, when I find one that doesn't have the part
number, I just tack it on with a description and underscores so that
later, I can still use the original document name to search for it -
revisions, etc. In this case, I'd just copy the part munber to the
front of that long filename and stick an underscore in there to make
it easier to find later.

Snarl,

Yes, a lot of PDFs from other companies have some random, perhaps
internally- significant title. But it's easy to edit the name (at least
with Mozilla it is) before you save it.

What bugs me is that I can't find a way of making Mozilla ask me if I
want to view or save a file before opening it- at least with PDFs, I
always have to check where the link is going before clicking. Netscape
always had such a setting, so does Mozilla (in preferences) but it makes
no difference.

I think this is an Acrobat problem (assuming you are using acrobat). I
have got "view PDFs in browser" turned off in Acrobat but it still
persists in opening them in the browser window.

John, the file name may be as you stated above, but that doesn't mean
that's the name you have to save it as. When downloading pdf, and
selecting "save as", just rename the file right then and there
(keeping the pdf extension), and that is how it will be named when
downloaded on your HD.

The same problem started to occur only recently on this machine using
either Netscape or Mozilla.

It turns out that searching was being performed via google.ca, vs
google.com. Every document retrieval was a redirect requiring viwing.
Attempts to correct this address linkage failed repeatedly.(type in
..com - get .ca)

Only way I found to get around it was to start a search using an old
search page window ( ie page 16 of an old search - saved prior to the
switch in linkage) with the new parameters entered - this resulted in
normal operation and documents saved without required viewing.

I assumed this forcible redirection was a new policy from Google,
encoded in their cookies, possibly to decentralize web traffic from
the main site.

I always copy the real title (and author and original source/date
where possible) and paste into the 'save as' window, with the
appropriate file extension. This can be corrected or abbreviated
later.

I'm sure John knows he can do that, but that's an extra step that
prompted the original "why can't they just send the file with the main
part number that appears at the top of the data sheet" post.
TI used to have all these "spru1234" filenames as their "document
numbers" whether for TTL data sheets or for DSP compiler manuals, and
I never saw anything that said what the letter sequence meant. It all
gave a strange feeling that TI's filing system was based on a legacy
computer system with an 8-character-max filename convention.
But now TI sends the filename as just the actual part number, just
like you would expect! Amazing! Maybe it's time to buy TI stock.

In ancient times before there was a Web (or even a PC!) you had to
order TI datasheets by some inventory number that had nothing to do
with the part number. Of course, you had to track down that number
first! Then write, phone, or fax, then wait a couple of weeks for
delivery.

LTC does strange things with save-as filenames, too. Yes, I know how
to edit them, but it's a nuisance, and it complicates the "replace
existing file?" dialog too.

I've never had a real fax machine, always used WinFax, so the quality
was reasonably good.

I don't recall "faxback" ever taking more than few minutes

One of my favorite peeves too.

With the page open (so you know what the hell it is),
click "Bookmarks", select "Manage Bookmarks", then
right-click on the bookmark's name, select "rename", and
call it what you'll remember. I don't think there's an

Agilent's semiconductor-site bookmarks include a user-session ID, so
they evaporate as soon as you exit the site. Smart!
