But is it a Stereo RF Modulator?

** Such a thing exists for $16 ???
Thats right, No way..!!
Its only a Mono one..
(I cannot even find a stereo unit in any Jaycar/DSE places..)

It would have to be, unless it is just joining the Left and right channels
together,
making it mono, and then your TV would have to be Stereo as well..
I think you may not be getting what you think you are getting.
i.e., it will just be crapy mono....

** It will be crappy no matter what. Our smug magician friend has a
clapped out 8yo Sharp ( stereo ?) TV with no AV connectors - likely a live
chassis model.

Getting decent sound out of that would take more magic than turning a
pumpkin into a shining coach

It would too..
Also this guy will spend heaps of time fitting his RF modulator to the TV, and then find
he gets RFI from somewhere and ends up with a
shitty picture as well..
and wheres the power going to come from to operate it? From the TV power supply,
as you said , It will be a live chassis, so when he plugs it in .. POP.... or worse..
Ahhh...
SO be VERY VERY carefull Richard, or you may kill yourself or someone you love, just to
save a few dollars..

That's cause he has not worked it out yet..

DUH! - cause its not going through the AGC in the VCR

RF devices usually have an AGC in them (to guard against over powered
inputs) and thes CAN get affected, maybe won't, but CAN.

** A modulator is NOT the same as a receiver.

The video input level is strictly defined.

OH, and is the rf modulator a stereo encoder as well?

** The Gosford Magician is not prepared to share his secrets or sources.

watch the (possible) AGC in the RF device, never know what macrovision
will
do to it (reason most vcrs will not pass a dvd signal through)
AGC is what macrovision is aimed to stuff up.

The vcr has an AGC to avoid pulsing from the tape.

If the AGC it turned off, the brightness will wobble up and down as signal
off the tape varies in strength, and over time the tapes seem to fade...

Macrovision interferes with the AGC by varying the front porch, and the AGC
then makes brightness wobbles up and down severely...
