RF Mod for 8yr old TV...?

Hey All!

Does anyone know of a kit I can buy or a cct somewhere that I can get to
make my own RF Modulator for my pour old Sharp TV? I got it for my 21st
b'day and Im 29yrs now - see the thing is it only has an RF input and with
digital TV around u just cant use it to connect a VCR or better yet a DVD!

I would love a 'magic box' where i could plug in my exisiting VCR and also a
DVD and then just play them thru the box and into the RF in the back of the
TV??

I have looked thru DSE, Jaycar and Altronics for kits and didnt find
anything except for the actualy RF Mods themselves? But I need the cct to
go around it?

Please help - Id prefer to keep the TV instead of by something new!

Cheers, Richard

I believe Jaycar have them lready made up.
They are called Modulators
I was offered one but did not get to see to
because it was not what I needed at the time (a few weeks
ago).

Why would you want to make your own, when you can buy the made thing for $30?
You cannot make one cheaper, that's why there are no kits around...
You could still place the made-up unit inside the TV if that's what you want to do.

** Jaycar sell an RF modulator for use with DVDs etc, cat: LM -3872 for
$28 - you'll need a 12 volt plug pack as well.

John,

Do u know what the kit number is please??

I had done a search on the site and come up with nothing? The things that
do come up are the motulator "modules" themselves but not the prapriatory
"bits" to make it connect to the right line levels etc?

Cheers, Richard

Allan,

Most of the "pre-made" modules are for CCD TV and not for RCA to TV(RF) -
beside that, most dont have Stereo inputs for the RF module and so it would
be a waste of time hooking up a DVD just to hear Mono when it is transferred
to RF?

Thanks anyway - but if u know where they are, please point me in the right
direction? and yeah, I was hoping to put it inside the TV with a direct
connection...

You want the crappy speakers in the old, all plastic, non AV equipped TV
set to do it for you ?

You want a direct AV connection to a LIVE CHASSIS TV !!!!!

Phil,

Thanks, thats video only and it is designed for CCD Cameras - I have already
found this one and it is not designed for DVD players to be plugged into a
TV - thanks anyway mate!

Thanks to everyone who replied to my original post - I have found what I
need, I have a cct and the details.

I can now make a "box" that has a left/right and video INPUT (x2: One for
DVD and one for Video) and an rf OUTPUT for the TV - the parts are going to
cost me about $6 and about $16 for the RF Mod main unit.

Its solved - thanks - some people were very helpful and pointed me in the
right direction and I thank those people very much.

Phil,

Thanks, thats video only

** WRONG !!!! It is both video and audio.

and it is designed for CCD Cameras

** Nonsense - it is a general purpose modulator.

** What makes you say that absolute load of bullshit ??

That is the MAIN thing Jaycar sell them for.

watch the (possible) AGC in the RF device, never know what macrovision will
do to it (reason most vcrs will not pass a dvd signal through)

** YOU do not know - but many thousands of others using the Jaycar
modulator with DVD players know.

Ever noticed how a macrovision protected VCR tape plays through a TV set
JUST FINE ???????

But is it a Stereo RF Modulator?
It would have to be, unless it is just joining the Left and right channels together,
making it mono,
and then your TV would have to be Stereo as well..
I think you may not be getting what you think you are getting.
i.e., it will just be crapy mono....

** It will be crappy no matter what. Our smug magician friend has a
clapped out 8yo Sharp ( stereo ?) TV with no AV connectors - likely a live
chassis model.

Getting decent sound out of that would take more magic than turning a
pumpkin into a shining coach

............ Phil

DUH! - cause its not going through the AGC in the VCR

RF devices usually have an AGC in them (to guard against over powered
inputs) and thes CAN get affected, maybe won't, but CAN.

OH, and is the rf modulator a stereo encoder as well?

You seem a rather angry person Phil - its a shame... ...but then again I
got more good info from this post than I did bad so I am happy with that -
Cheers everyone, and you too Phil. :)

BTW - sound out of the old Sharp is great, thats why I would like to keep
it, beside the sentimental value of something that was given to me on my
21st - and from what I have found out about the TV is isnt a live chassis.
Also, the info I received on the Jaycar unit came via a few phone calls to
the local dealer here - so I was going on the information that I was given,
just like the information I was given on this newsgroup. ;-)

But its solved, fixed and under control - also, if anyone else was
interested. The old PSOne RF Mods work great too, if u can find them as a
second hand somewhere...? I dealer here on the coast was selling a whole
heap of old ones for $10? None left though by the time I got there...

Thanks Everyone.

Cheers, Richard

The video input level is strictly defined.
