Problem - Horizontal lines, broken camera

I have digital camera (Olympus C-5050). Yesterday it fell down and something
is wrong now. On every photo there are terrible horizontal lines. But
everything else works OK(Zoom, Menu, LCD).

Is it possible to repair that? Is it a very seriuos problem? Maybe someone
knows what is wrong.

My first guess is that the drop broke a connection to the CCD image sensor or
the chip(s) that address it. Since the sensor is a matrix device, loss of one
bit of the addressing would cause the loss of repeating lines of the data.

Is it not more likely to create a repeat of certain lines if you lose an
address line? If it's a row or column select line you will lose the data, if
it's an address within the camera the data for the line would probably be
wrong, that is it would be data from a different place in the photograph. My
first thought was that the interpolation is up the spout but I am sure if
you zoomed in enough and did a bit of arithmatic you could work it out if
you have the resolution of the CCD and the resolution of a final picture. It
would also give you more info if you selected lower quality photographs and
examined those. You should also try putting the camera in different
orientations and takin pics i.e. with it pointing down and up, on the left
side and the right side, upside down. This may let you discover a loose
connection. Compare the picture with a picture taken before teh damage at a
really high rate of zoom. Is the good picture built up of alternate lines of
square and rectangular pixels as this one is, if not then it looks like a
data short problem not an address issue.

Last resort, throw it at the ceiling, it may reverse the damage (A JOKE)

All of which is interesting but the chance of mending it are pretty slim.
