You're an idiot.

Seriously, some people have never seen tants blow up... it's pretty
random and fairly rare. If charging current is small, or if they're
derated to under half rated voltage, or you just get lucky, you may
never run into it.

We once had a couple of tantalum explode on powerup, so we set up to
stress-test the rest of the reel, and we couldn't get any to fail.
Bummer. So I just don't use tantalums in new designs. 22 uF in a 1206
ceramic is cool, X5 dielectric even.

I've known ceramics to 'catch fire' too due to power-on dV/dt apparently.

Lately? Some of the earlier parts with super-thin dielectrics had
shorting and moisture problems. I thought most of that had been worked
out. Are the failured related to capacitance density?

I guess we should all think about powerup dI/dT. It seems to cause a
lot of problems.

One of my customers bought a *lot* of VME crates (from a British
company!) whose +5 bus sometimes spikes to +9 on turnon. We couldn't
figure out why we were losing caps and FPGAs...
