A couple of years ago I ran an eithernet cable from my router in one
end of the house to a room being converted into a study at the other
end of the house. At the time I allowed a couple of feet of extra cable
but now I'm rearranging the room and need an additional three feet of
cable. Do they make something like a double female eithernet cable
connector that would allow me to connect an additonal cable with the
traditional two male connectors? Thanks.

Just go to an electronics store (aka Jaycar, Dick Smith, etc. here in
Australia) and look for an RJ45 female-to-female adaptor. That will couple
two RJ45 ethernet leads together. I doubt it complies with any of the
ethernet or ISDN standards, but it's grass-roots networking and it works!

I use them regularly when fiddling with network arrangements and I need to
extend a cable a short distance to reach a device but have plenty of short
ethernet leads on hand.

Get a copy of the data sheet such as at:
http://www.atmel.com/dyn/resources/prod_documents/doc0368.pdf

it is detailed. The PCB your device is soldered to appears to be just a DIP
carrier, which should make it relatively easy to connect to.

This site has a few more resources that may be of use:

Hello Everyone,

I have an Interesting problem that a friend of mine dropped in my
lap this weekend. Her Family just had a sensor light at their door, you
know the lights I mean, the ones that you always set off when you drive
down the street and somebody dosn't know how to set the sensitivity of
the light. Well the problem with this light is that when ever you turn
off the Fluros in the kitchen the sensor light comes on. Go Diff. I
thought that Yea No Worries if it was happening when you turned the light
on but not when they are turning the light. The electrican who installed
the light has no Idea either. So Help. The light is not one of the fugly
black things that you buy at Kmart or Target but mirabella Carriage light.

Please post here or mail me if you have any Ideas.

Oh, I also Checked the fuse of the light cct, it is 8Amp, there is also
another fluro in the house but if runs off a power cct and this light has
no effect of the sensor light.

Most of the IC manufacturers have web sites with data sheets
available. The following is a list of sites I've collected.

Most of these I havn't tried yet so I'd appreciate any feedback

Go to http://www.scruznet.com/~gcreager/hello2.htm. At the bottom of
this home page you wil find an excellent list of links to semi
manufacturers.

Go to Harris and download the Acrobat reader if you don't already have
it. (I asume you have a PC). I failed three times downloading Adobe's
version, the one at Harris works.

National Semi and Harris (that I know of) put out data sheets in
acrobat format plus National have app notes. That's as far as I've
explored so far.

The flicker effect is caused by the ionization of neon gas between the
two "flame shaped" electrodes. The needed potential is based on the
pressure of the gas and the spacing of the electrodes. Convective
currents cause the climbing effect just as in a Jacob's ladder.

When the neon fires, there is a current flow from one electrode to the
other.
Less potential is needed to keep the gas ionized once the lamp fires.
The net effect is that there is not enough potential to ionize all the gas
in the plate area thus creating the flicker effect.

Have you ever noticed how a flickering neon panel lamp generally comes
on solidly when even a small amount of external light is applied? Think
quantum mechanics!

I don't think it's a Jacob's ladder effect. These bulbs will flicker
horizontally. As for the gas in them - most seem close enough to pure
neon, but one I have has a significant trace of argon (guessing a percent
or two).
As for why they flicker? I don't know why, but this seems to be a
somewhat common characteristic of "normal glow".

snip

- Don Klipstein (don@misty.com)

And my best guess is, there is not enough current flowing for the amount
of (electrode) surface area in the lamp. If the voltage were increased or
the ballast resistance reduced (allowing the current to go higher) the
whole lamp would light, but the life would be greatly reduced.

Thank You.

<clive@emanator.demon.co.uk> applied digits to the keyboard and routed
the information from some kind of brain (presumably), thusly:

Well now everyones come to a variety of verdicts on the neon flicker
effect lamps, it's my turn to put forward my theories and a little fun
circuit I designed a while back, based on the same principle.

When a conventional neon tube heats up, the resistance of the gas inside
seems to rise. This may be something to do with the excited state of
the gas molecules making the gasseous conductor change it's electrical
characteristics.

This is demonstrated vividly in the special effect crackle units that
consist of a large diameter neon tube filled with short pieces of glass
capillery tubing.

When the tube is energised, the gas allows a conductive path through the
route of least resistance. As the tube heats up, it seeks an
alternative route, and the original cools down while the new route heats
up. The effect seems to require the slower 50/60Hz AC as an aid to re-
striking in a different route, and doesn't do so well with a high
frequency supply.

This gives the rather attractive jiggling effect as the zig-zag line of
red light crackles about in the tube.

The same could possibly apply to the flicker flame lamps, where the area
of discharge heats up and rises in resistance.

These lamps contain a resistor in the base (the 240v units get quite
hot) which means that the discharge can't take place over the whole
surface of the electrode. As the discharge moves about it increases
resistance temporarily in that area, and seeks another area of the
electrode where an easier circuit is available.

Presumably you could vary the effect by using an extra resistor in
series.

Now for the circuit......

I was toying with various gas discharge lamp circuits in my mind, and
wondered if it would be possible to make a mini strobe effect that
utilised the little NE2 style neon indicator lamps with a Xenon fill.

My idea was that if it's breakdown voltage was low enough, then an
ultra-simple micro strobe or beacon could be made with just a diode,
limiting resistor and capacitor with the mini Xenon lamp in parallel
with the cap.

The capacitor would charge via the diode and limiting resistor until the
Xenon lamps breakdown voltage was reached, whereupon the Xenon lamp
would strike and discharge the capacitor with a bright flash.

I decided to try the effect with a Neon lamp to see what it would look
like, knowing that it would blacken quickly because of sputtering.

While playing with the circuit I casually connected a few more neons in
parallel to see if the change in resistance would make alternate lights
flash randomly.

It worked. But obviously made the lamps blacken very quickly.

I changed the circuit to use a smaller cap (100n) with an extra series
resistor to the neons to limit the pulse current and minimise
sputtering. The smaller cap allowed a faster flash frequency which was
above the threshold of visible flickering.

The effect seemed variable, so I made a test board up with several
circuits with different series resistor values, and discovered that the
effect was only reliable when the neons were being driven at quite a
high pulse current.

Subsequently I've made various "toys" up with the effect, including:-

A piece of rigid plastic "beer tube" with 32 lamps in parallel and the
circuitry and mains flex glued in one end.

A translucent plastic mantle clock (from Au Naturale in the UK) with
every crevice stuffed with neons.

A standard UK square pin neon night light with 9 neons crammed
mercillesly inside. (looks great)

A piece of "techno art" with a grid of neons on a PCB mounted in a
picture frame.

The circuit is as follows....

L----[100K]--o--[ 1K ]----o---o---o---o---o---o--
| | | | | | |
100n === (ne)(ne)(ne)(ne)(ne)(ne) loads more neons
| | | | | | |
N-----|>|----o------------o---o---o---o---o---o--
diode

The 100K quarter watt resistor is for 240 volts.
Use a lower value for 110v. (47K?)
The 1K resistor is quarter watt.
The diode is any old 200V PIV type. I used a 1N4007 from stock.
The capacitor is a 100n (0.1uF) at 250V Metallised Polyester Film.
The neons were all identical from the same source.

The design allows the diode and 100K to be laid down the side of the cap
making the circuit very compact. Current consumption is miniscule at
about a quarter of a watt regardless of the number of neons used.

The neons can be chained along two bits of thin bare wire as busbars.

Where the neons are in close vicinity, they will interact in a dark
room, and swarm in clusters.

The circuit may take a week to get up to full performance as the neons
burn in, and will be most active in a dark room, since bright light will
tend to influence the effect.

When cased in a plastic tube, the neons respond to hand
capacitance/fields and will happily follow you're hand about as you
touch or slide it up and down the length of the tube.

I call the effect "fireflies". The circuit has some commercial
viability, so treat it as shareware if you decide to use it
commercially. Other than that, play and enjoy.

This circuit operates at mains potential and care should be exercised
when testing... blah, blah, blah, etc.
