plug UPS into surge protector?

User's manual for my APC UPS (ES 725) states, "Plug the...power cord
directly into a wall outlet; not a surge protector or power strip."

Any guesses as to why it shouldn't be powered with a surge protector
upstream?

You are likely to plug other things into the
strip/protector and exceed the capacity of the outlet ("I
can't be broke because I still have checks" syndrome). Also,
if the protector trips momentarily it can upset the UPS.
