Please recommend a free compiler

Hi all:
I will be using a WinXP Pro machine and I need a free verilog compiler for a
VLSI class. A friend recommended Silos verilog, but the one I found will not
run on XP, and my buddy has it on XP. Where is the XP version? So far I
have downloaded Icon verilog but not installed it yet. I want to get your
opinion on which is best since the want that was recommended I was not able
to find. Please advise.

I used ModelSim from xilinx, it's free and very powerfull compare to silos.

For suitable definition of "free" I guess. I never feel
very "free" when using a Microsoft "operating system".

My simulator of choice (that I plug regularly on this NG)
is Icarus Verilog - free as in beer _and_ as in speech.
http://icarus.com/eda/verilog

Runs without restrictions on all known workstation-class
computers, and then some ... see the "obscure hack" threads
from June 2003:

I found several restrictions, in the sense that it didn't seem to have
very good coverage of the current version of the LRM.

I switched to a commercial simulator when I realised that it would
cost *less* than a free one (when I considered the cost of the time
taken to find the bugs in the free tool).

This shouldn't be taken to mean that I think Icarus is a bad tool ...
certainly Steve has put in a lot of effort, but since he only works on
it part time, there's a limit to the rate at which he can fix bugs,
add features, check LRM compliance, etc.

Regards,
Allan.

I srongly recommend icarus (www.icarus.com). If you have cygwin than
you can built the last snap shot (I can mail its binaries to you).

I am also tring to build verilator but having a lot of trouble (cygwin
path and WIN XP problems).

Hi

I used VeriLogger Pro from Synapticad and found it very useful.

Just read through these postings, and I think Anuya understood free as
meant by the original poster (he's talking about Silos, also not a
completely free poster). I think free here is obviously meant as in free
for size limited, non-commercial designs (which VeriLogger and Silos are).

You were a little harsh in your response too, IMO. Let's try to keep it
friendly.

If it runs under Linux, I would bet it runs under cygwin

Rudi, dont bet - cver does not work under cygwin. NO WAY.
it will run in Windows Linux emulator (tested in VirtualPC) but not under
cygwin, and there would be major rework required to get it compileable, I
checked and gave up, too much to rewrite. cver is really heavy weight c
code.

Antti,

I was able to get Cver to work under Cygwin. It only needs couple of
changes to the Makefile and I think some include file fixes in two C
source files. With those changes, it compiles and runs cleanly. I can
send you the changes if you want.

yes, PLEASE do so!
I did also get it to compile but it complained about 1 or files and after
doing some search I found that the code uses some functionality not
available under cygwin, I also did not see a quick fix, but well I only
spent few hours with the problem.

Sorry we haven't replied sooner. GPL Cver does run using Cygwin on Windows
and user have emailed the few changes needed to compile and run under
Cygwin. We have added a makefile for windows and made a few #ifdef changes
so that Cver releases will compile and run on Windows under Cygwin without
any need for patches. We did not add the changes to Friday's 1.10f bug
fix release because we still have not been able to make the "+load_vpi="
dynamic loading of PLI working with Cygwin dlls. We are working
on this and will start including the changes when we can get the PLI
to work under Cygwin. As of now, we are not able to dynamically link
libraries under Cygwin because of undeclared external symbol errors.
Does anyone know how to duplicate the Linux dlopen/dlsym behavior
that GPL Cver on Linux uses?
/Steve

I have tested cver on cygwin looks fine (excpet that I needed to
change all my defparam ...=value to #(value) style (it certainly did
not like the former. It builds quickly with no trouble at all on
cygwin.
It is slow, however, compared to ohters. On a 12000 lines of verilog
code:
ncsim/vcs 20 sec
Active-HDL 6.2 (Aldec) 45 sec
icarus 5 min
cver 12 min
I wonder how much the non-free -O can help. Can someone give an
estimation.
I'll try it soon on verilator (once I'll finish the struggle with its
system variable definitions).

Perhaps it is worth to compile with Intel C++ V8?

For some curve fitting it nearly halve the time needed to do the calculation
for me.
