PIC or RABBIT Core Module

I want to do some experimenting with digital circuits. I'm wondering if
a simple PIC or a RABBIT core module or something in between, would be
the better way to go for me. Right now I am leaning to ward one of the
RABBIT development kits that are in the $150 price range. My back
ground in electronics is limited. I do have a lot of experience
programming in everything from assembly to java. Here are some of the
reasons I am leaning to the RABBIT product. Let me know if my thinking
is wrong.
Don't need a separate programmer to reprogram the chip.
Easier to add other components like LCD displays and others.
Can program it with higher level languages like C
Pre-built board to minimize what I have to build.

about the first application I am hoping to experiment with. I welcome
any recommendations especially if they include links with more
information to read up on.

Depending on what you want anything from a lowly PIC10F102 up to a
RABBIT or an ARM would be he good choice.

My general advice for a newbie: use what your neighbour (or anyone
else who will be helping you) is already using. For a newbie help is
much more important than technical features (and sometimes also more
important than price).
