Probably not. John Larkin believes all kinds of nonsense he finds on climate change denial web-sites.

The quote is from 1988, when there wasn\'t a lot of data from which to extrapolate. Even satellite surveillance wasn\'t up to much.

The most recent minimum in Arctic sea ice cover seems to have happened in 2012, when it got down to about 30%. The next one probably won\'t happen in our life-times, unless one the ice sheets starts sliding off into the ocean rapidly - which might be a tipping point.

The problem is that the climate isn\'t all that predictable, and more CO2 in the atmosphere is pushing it into places where it hasn\'t been for the last few million years.
Hansen has been telling people that for some years now.

It seems very unlikely that Hansen would have made any such specific prediction back in 1988. Back then, nobody was all that confident that anthropogenic global warming was actually going on - when you have the Altantic Multidecadal Oscillation imposing a lot of low frequency noise on the observer variables it takes a while to get confident that something is actually going on. It looked as if it was, but nobody who knew what he was talking about - and Hansen certainly did - would have been silly enough to be all that specific.

Probably not. John Larkin believes all kinds of nonsense he finds on climate change denial web-sites.

https://skepticalscience.com/Hansen-West-Side-Highway.htm

What Hansen was talking about actually happened during Hurricane Sandy in 2012, so Hansen wasn\'t too far off.

Hey Sloman, Hansen also predicted that the Arctic would be free of summer ice by 2018 at the latest:

https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1988&dat=20080624&id=7mgiAAAAIBAJ&sjid=7qkFAAAAIBAJ&pg=5563,4123490

That\'s what the reporter might have understood him to be saying. The denialist propaganda machine much prefers quoting what journalists think they heard to what people like Hansen actually said.

Hey Sloman, that is what he DID SAY!

You could only claim that if you had a transcript of what Hansen actually said to the reporter. What the reporter subsequently thought he said isn\'t all that reliable.
Now you want to refute it because the prediction was FALSE.

We hadn\'t actually found out about the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation until about 1993.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlantic_multidecadal_oscillation

The quote is from 1988, when there wasn\'t a lot of data from which to extrapolate. Even satellite surveillance wasn\'t up to much.

So what? It was a false prediction intended to trigger political action.
Don\'t be silly.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earth_in_the_Balance

published in 1992 - and written by Al Gore with a lot of advice from good climate scientists - was as near as anybody got to political action at the time.
The most recent minimum in Arctic sea ice cover seems to have happened in 2012, when it got down to about 30%. The next one probably won\'t happen in our life-times, unless one the ice sheets starts sliding off into the ocean rapidly - which might be a tipping point.

A fact which many alarmists don\'t know or knowingly ignore.
So what?
The problem is that the climate isn\'t all that predictable, and more CO2 in the atmosphere is pushing it into places where it hasn\'t been for the last few million years.

That is your THEORY.
Scarcely mine. There\'s a whole climate science community thinking about the subject, and it has been getting government support for quite a while now.
The IPCC was set up to 1988 to keep track of their findings and report on them to politicians in terms that politicians could be expected to understand.
Hansen has been telling people that for some years now.

Falsely.
That may be your opinion, but you are an idiot. Since the mid-1990s the fossil carbon extraction industry has been aware that any attempt to reduce anthropgenic global warming will cut into their business, and they have spent quite a bit on climate change denial propaganda. It does target gullible twits like you and John Larkin, because you have to be pretty silly to swallow the kind of guff they have to serve up.

You\'ve outed yourself as a gullible sucker again.

SNIPPERMAN, Sydney

Hey SNIPPERMAN, firstly, anyone who advocates nuking their OWN country to forestall an enemy invasion IS, by definition, AN IDIOT. This means YOU!

Secondly, Hansen is ALSO an idiot, as proven by his FALSE predictions, which were wholly irresponsible for someone who calls himself a \"scientist.\" Of course, he is not - he IS a political advocate.

For someone who claims to be so smart, Bill Sloman is incredibly
stoopid so much of the time. Mauna Loa indeed! He\'s too retarded to
see what\'s going on here. When people like myself went to the trouble
of actually putting the Global Warming \'science\' to the test and found
it didn\'t add up, they began shifting the goalposts. Notice how all
the measurements have to have been carried out in inaccessible places
to be valid now? Like the tops of mountains in remote countries where
no one ever goes. One day, drones will be some commonplace that us
ordinary saps will be able to carry out measurements on those peaks,
but they\'ll then invalidate that method by saying it\'s flawed and the
only place to take really valid measurements from is the ISS!
You remember how it all began with claims over the great demon CO2?
Well, now we\'ve got them on the run over that, they don\'t mention it
so much any more. They now talk generally about \"carbon\" and are
slowly switching the attention away to methane (CH4) because it\'s
still carbon based, but much much harder to measure and there are no
reliable readings for atmospheric methane going back very far at all.
So if they can convince the gullible like Sloman that it\'s really
methane that\'s the big issue and sweep CO2 quietly under the rug of
history, then they will have once again excluded those they see as
interfering nuisance \'amateurs\' and \'plebs\' from finding the evidence
to contradict them. Poor old Bill is too *dumb* to be able to see all
this, but fortunately others all over the world are now waking up
*fast* LOL.

does talk about the early work on global warming - the stuff that Cursitor Doom imagines that he has re-discovered. It\'s been up since about 2003.

There\'s nothing inaccessible about the Mauna Loa and Cape Grim observatories - you can take a plane and hire a car and drive to either place any time you want to. Hannah Gadsby grew up even closer to Cape Grim than I did. The problem that these remote observatories evade is that human burn a lot of fossil carbon, ad if you aren\'t a long way down-wind from that kind of CO2 emission you get a lot of variation in the CO2 level you measure, all of it biased towards higher values, like the one\'s Cursitor Doom found in his publications from around 1900 and earlier.

> One day, drones will be some commonplace that us ordinary saps will be able to carry out measurements on those peaks, but they\'ll then invalidate that method by saying it\'s flawed and the only place to take really valid measurements from is the ISS!

Ordinary saps would be able to make their own measurements at both places. No need for any drone.

https://www.amazon.com/Portable-Digital-Temperature-Humidity-Diagnosis/dp/B01KTJL6OK?th=1

offers a handheld monitor for $135. The discussions of the results people see do make it clear that you own exhalations can push up the readings appreciably.

> You remember how it all began with claims over the great demon CO2? Well, now we\'ve got them on the run over that, they don\'t mention it so much any more.

Cursitor Doom hasn\'t got anybody on the run - he does run off at the mouth a lot, but that\'s it.

>They now talk generally about \"carbon\" and are slowly switching the attention away to methane (CH4) because it\'s still carbon based, but much much harder to measure and there are no reliable readings for atmospheric methane going back very far at all.

It\'s also a much more potent greenhouse gas, but atmospheric levels are pretty low - it\'s half life in the atmosphere is about 9 years, eventually oxidising to CO2 and water.

> So if they can convince the gullible like Sloman that it\'s really methane that\'s the big issue and sweep CO2 quietly under the rug of history, then they will have once again excluded those they see as interfering nuisance \'amateurs\' and \'plebs\' from finding the evidence to contradict them.

Methane is less of a problem than CO2 because there is less of it, and it doesn\'t last. It is easier to minimise emissions, and it is worth doing, but it doesn\'t \"sweep O2 under the rug\",

> Poor old Bill is too *dumb* to be able to see all this, but fortunately others all over the world are now waking up *fast* LOL.

Gullible twits like Cursitor Doom fall for remarkably stupid climate change denial propaganda. He is stupid enough to gloat about his gullibility, and conceited enough to think that it is evidence of his \"superior\" intelligence. Pity about that.

Detonating a relatively clean fusion bomb in the centre of an iron mine would make that iron ore deposit inaccessible for quite a while, but it wouldn\'t spread any significant radioactivity around - as project Plowshare demonstrated.

This is all much too complicated for Flyguy to get what\'s left of his tiny mind around so he concentrates on the details that he thinks that he can understand.

It does illustrate what a total idiot he is, so I\'m happy to repost the more obviously idiotic bits in the hope that others will find them as funny as I do.

Flyguy hasn\'t noticed that you have to be fairly clever to get your hands on a nuclear weapon that works. You can\'t go to your local gun shop and buy one, and the people who have neatly packaged nuclear weapons to hand take care that they don\'t fall into the wrong hands.

Flyguy talking about other people\'s mental defects has a fairly high ironic content. He would seem to be our leading example of senile dementia - Fred Bloggs is going much the same way but isn\'t quite as far gone yet.

An IDIOT idea from idiots like SNIPPERMAN that never went anywhere! Try READING your own reference:

Negative impacts from Project Plowshare\'s tests generated significant public opposition, which eventually led to the program\'s termination in 1977.[5] These consequences included tritiated water (projected to increase by CER Geonuclear Corporation to a level of 2% of the then-maximum level for drinking water)[6] and the deposition of fallout from radioactive material being injected into the atmosphere before underground testing was mandated by treaty.
