Pigs root - as in "root, hog or die" - which s to say they use their
tusks to turn over the soil and expose roots and tubers.
The reasons listed in "Collapse" as those given for eliminating pigs on
Tikopia were, that they raided and rooted up gardens, were an
inefficient means to feed humans (in that it takes ten pounds of
human-edible vegetables to produce one pound of pork) and had become
luxury food for chiefs.
