OT - Welcome to Doomsday

Pigs root - as in "root, hog or die" - which s to say they use their
tusks to turn over the soil and expose roots and tubers.

The reasons listed in "Collapse" as those given for eliminating pigs on
Tikopia were, that they raided and rooted up gardens, were an
inefficient means to feed humans (in that it takes ten pounds of
human-edible vegetables to produce one pound of pork) and had become
luxury food for chiefs.

Hmmm- that 10 lbs edible vegetables/ pound pork seems strange. Early man
was pretty good at domesticating those animals that were best at
converting the inedibles to human edible meat or milk- like the cow and
goat. The pig must have been good for something- and who lets pigs roam
free- they should have been penned up and fed scraps.

Yeah, that's what early man was good at. Modern man feeds his pigs corn
and soy, which are valuable nutritients for humans. --D.

That's the nice thing about being alive today.
We eat for the enjoyment as much as the nutrition.

Last weekend I made a great big pot of pheasant and dumplings, I'll be
they wouldn't have tasted NEARLY as good had they not been fattened up
on the corn they pilfer. I have almost as much cooking them as I did
hunting them.

No.
Pheasants are attractive - and to blast them with a 12 bore doesn't really give them a sporting chance.

Decapitation with hedgeclippers achieves much the same result, and you
dont have to pick lead shot out of your meal.

At the bottom of my Grandmother's garden hung a bucket. This was used for
putting in all the kitchen scraps (un-eaten food, peelings etc). The pig
farmer collected from the buckets every day and made his own pig-swill. The
pork from those animals was really nice and I looked forward to Brawn for
Sunday tea when we visited.

Nowadays such practice has been stopped. Farme pigs are no longer allowed
to eat such matter.

Round here, it's amazing that any last long enough to get shot. The
roads are littered with squashed ones. A few days ago, one ran right in
front of my car, cleared it, then TURNED BACK straight under the wheels.
Perhpas they know they are bred to be shot.
