Sure, a lot of Chinese worked on the railroad.

Gosh that's a lot of subtext to read into one sentence of commentary!

It's your constant theme.

Bitrex has a rather wider repertoire than that.

John Larkin's enthusiasm wildly inaccurate abuse is a lot better represented in his posts that any kind of racism in the posts that bitrex pushes out.

No love for the Great Northern RR? built on a smaller budget with fewer
casualties, thru rougher terrain with no "stimulus" money and much less
drama/politicking

The intercontinental railway was built many years before that one,
with men, shovels, mules, and black powder. It was an astounding piece
of construction... during the Civil War. The Central Pacific/Union
Pacific created the real United States.

And I can hike through the old tunnels of the Central Pacific, and see
the original drill holes and walk on the China Wall. I used to work on
Judah Street and I still ski on Mount Judah.

the name "China Wall" would seem to indicate whom this real American

I do have a suspicion that if a peculiar class of refugee made up of
millions of 27 y/o hot Swedish blonde women, with no other skills, were
swarming our southern border attempting to enter our country illegally
or to seek asylum it would not be possible to make any profit building
detention centers for them. I admit that.

It seemed a little odd to bring up the China Wall in relation to this
summary of the history of an American project without at least also
mentioning in passing what it is, for those unfamiliar, don't you think?

Most people have access to Google.

It's probably OK to use the memorial to workers who died as a foot path
as it was designed that way but I figured it might be, y'know,
respectful or something to mention what it was for in the description

The China Wall isn't a memorial, it's part of a railroad. The sign is
a memorial, and I have never walked on the sign.

I see. So the wall itself is not now considered a memorial, but is still
considered part of a railroad. However you can walk on the railroad but
you can't walk on the sign, which is the actual memorial, but is not the
wall, which is a railroad that you walk on.

Again, google allows anyone interested to look things up.

This is a very confusing tour.

Just found this at the local bookstore, which has a lot of regional
stuff:

https://www.amazon.com/Ghosts-Gold-Mountain-Transcontinental-Railroad/dp/1328618579/ref=sr_1_1?crid=ZYIMEJZ9MJ3I&keywords=ghosts+of+gold+mountain&qid=1562599885&s=gateway&sprefix=ghosts%2Caps%2C225&sr=8-1

I've just started it, and it's really good so far.

One problem in reconstructing their history is that thousands of
literate Chinese worked on the railroad, and sent hundreds of
thousands of letters home, but no original letters or diaries or any
other 1st person accounts have ever been found.

No, I'm just amused that so many white people can't get over being
white, and seem obsessed by it. Guilty too.

Here in California, white is just another shade on the hardware store
paint sample card. Maybe a third of the people in my company are
white-white.

Which reminds me to pick up a paint sample thing. I need an off-white
to touch up some patches in the upstairs bathroom.

Mind you, you grew up in a more racially-diverse environment than I did.

I grew up surrounded by 99% white "wealthy coastal elites" and, well,
it's no secret many of them are the stupidest motherfuckers you ever did
see. You too might find it tiresome after a while...

written on cheap paper of that kind that yellows and crumbles to dust
after ~100 years, maybe.

Some letters my father wrote home on V-Mail stationary from 1944 and
1945 have survived with very little degradation, the stationary was high
quality.

I don't know what "get over being white" means - would I want to be
hispanic or black instead if offered? Not very likely, straight white
men tend to have had it pretty easy relatively speaking. why would I not
prefer things easier rather than harder

Mind you, you grew up in a more racially-diverse environment than I did.

When I was a kid, in New Orleans, there were basically two races,
black and white. Black weren't allowed in white restaurants or hotels
or schools or neighborhoods. Drinking fountains had WHITES ONLY signs.
Blacks had to sit in the back of the bus. Oddly enough, I had some
Chinese friends. The first time I had Mexican food was in Aspen.

I attended the first high school to be integrated in Louisiana. Three
little black girls and a dozen FBI agents showed up first day. The
girls were warmly welcomed, especially by the Jewish kids. Jews and
blacks were allies back then.
