OT. Talking to an Apple. Losing the will to live ...

iPod Touch 2G. PC running Windows 7 and laptop running Vista. Just need to
be able to take a photo from either of the computers, and drop it into a
folder on the iPod where it will be visible, and can be used in the
slideshow app that's native to the iPod. USB or WiFi. Doesn't matter.

Here's my stupid suggestion...

Have you considered just emailing the pictures?

I mean if on the ipod you set the mail app up to like a gmail account, then
email the pictures from the pc to the account, download them on the ipod
using the same account?

When the pictures show up in the ipods mail app, you can just save them.

Unless there are 100's of them, it works in a pinch.

Sounds like you might need to register the dll then. Cannot recall the
command, anyone?

Brian

Hmmm. I got the info from a YouTube video. The lad doing it was not very
good at explaining what he was doing, but it seemed fairly clear that all he
did was put the dll into the same directory as the executable. At this sort
of level, you're getting beyond my competency level, as in I don't know how
exactly programs make use of dlls, or how they find and access them.

Simply copying the DLL into place is often not enough, if you open a
"DOS" window by running CMD.EXE

change into the folder the DLL is in (sometimes it matters where you put
it, but mostly you'll get away with it being anywhere)

type the following

%WINDIR%\SYSTEM32\REGSVR32.EXE "THENAMEOFYOUR.DLL"

You might need to do the same for any .OCX files

if any fail to register, that DLL may need another one in turn (find out
with Dependency Walker)

http://www.dependencywalker.com/

But if you're installing bits of iTunes to make copying work, why not
install the whole thing, or replace the iThing with something less
control-freaky?

I recall that I ran Linux once. That is, Linux and I ran a foot race. I
finished second, but Linux finished next-to-last. I don't recall whether
or not he was attired, but it seemed that he was breathing quite rapidly.

Amongst my Apple gear, I have an iPod Touch 2G. It is registered with
my iTunes, and I can transfer photos back and forth via that route. A
need has now arisen to be able to transfer photos to it from another
machine that does not have iTunes, nor does the owner want it to have
iTunes. You would think that for the purposes of transferring
non-proprietry photo formats like .jpg, it would just appear as a
mass storage device with the photo folders visible to allow a simple
drag and drop operation. But being Apple, that of course, seems to be
a no, then.
So I went looking for a simple application that would do this. And
that's where it has become truly frustrating. Just about every one
that I find that will run, turns out to be a demo version that will
only allow you 10 transactions or similar. As for the 'real' free
ones, I haven't found a single one that just runs without issue.
Every time I find one that seems to install ok, something goes wrong.
For instance, I tried iphonebrowser. Looks like it will do the job,
but when you run it, it says that a dll file is missing. Onto Google.
Yep. There's a writeup. Just download the dll and put it in the same
folder as the exe for iphonebrowser, and magically, it will all work
now ! And does it ? DIF ... "The dll xxxx can't be found ..."
AAAAARRRRGGGGHHHHH !
And I just keep getting crap like this no matter which route I try to
go.
I have spent so much time on this that I am seriously losing the will

On my older iPod, I believe there was a step in the origional iPod setup where
you told it if you wanted it to be viewable as an external drive.

Ineptocracy

(in-ep-toc’-ra-cy) – a system of government where the least capable to
lead are elected by the least capable of producing, and where the
members of society least likely to sustain themselves or succeed, are
rewarded with goods and services paid for by the confiscated wealth of a
diminishing number of producers.

Update ...

I have finally persuaded the free program Syncios to run correctly. I don't
know what I did, but it started working and has been ok each time I have
started it. Previously, it ran ok, could see the iPod ok, and read
everything on it, and displayed it. Clicking on any of the program tabs like
"music" or "apps" brought up exactly what you would expect. Then, just as
you got to thinking that you'd found one at last that worked, when you
clicked on "photos", it crashed ...

About the only thing that I can come up with is as you start to run the
program, it comes up with dire warnings about making sure that iTunes is
turned off. I had iTunes set to automatically open when the iPod was plugged
in - not that it actually (visibly) did, but I've now stopped that anyway,
so perhaps that was the answer.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions.

If you are trying to operate an iPod ouside Stephen's Walled Garden be
careful. Apple will brick the device if they catch you.

There are apps in their store that seem to work around iTunes ... But in any
case, if they did, I would just jailbreak the thing. It's quite old now, and
everything that's on it is also on my iPad, so it would not be any great
loss.
