Amongst my Apple gear, I have an iPod Touch 2G. It is registered with my
iTunes, and I can transfer photos back and forth via that route. A need has
now arisen to be able to transfer photos to it from another machine that
does not have iTunes, nor does the owner want it to have iTunes. You would
think that for the purposes of transferring non-proprietry photo formats
like .jpg, it would just appear as a mass storage device with the photo
folders visible to allow a simple drag and drop operation. But being Apple,
that of course, seems to be a no, then.

So I went looking for a simple application that would do this. And that's
where it has become truly frustrating. Just about every one that I find that
will run, turns out to be a demo version that will only allow you 10
transactions or similar. As for the 'real' free ones, I haven't found a
single one that just runs without issue. Every time I find one that seems to
install ok, something goes wrong. For instance, I tried iphonebrowser. Looks
like it will do the job, but when you run it, it says that a dll file is
missing. Onto Google. Yep. There's a writeup. Just download the dll and put
it in the same folder as the exe for iphonebrowser, and magically, it will
all work now ! And does it ? DIF ... "The dll xxxx can't be found ..."
AAAAARRRRGGGGHHHHH !

And I just keep getting crap like this no matter which route I try to go.

I have spent so much time on this that I am seriously losing the will to
live. Am I just being dumb here ? Do any of the 'putah experts on here know
any way that I can do this simply and easily, or know of a free, fully
functional bit of software to facilitate what I need to do. Just to recap.
iPod Touch 2G. PC running Windows 7 and laptop running Vista. Just need to
be able to take a photo from either of the computers, and drop it into a
folder on the iPod where it will be visible, and can be used in the
slideshow app that's native to the iPod. USB or WiFi. Doesn't matter.

I use windows explorer to get jepgs off my apple devices.

Also there should be a built-in windows import/export feature in
Explorer that works well with apple devices.

Just jailbreak the iPod Touch 2G. Assuming you have the latest
firmware, that would be IOS 4.2.1. If not 4.2.1 update it first.

Oops. iExplorer will not work because it requires the drivers in
iTunes. Instead, try:
<http://www.copytrans.net/copytransmanager.php>
which does NOT require iTunes but is not free. Some more alternatives
to using iTunes:

See the Cydia based apps near the bottom of the page (which only run
on a jailbroken iPod Touch or iPhone).

Thanks. I'll take a look over there. And to Jeff. I have an Apple TV, which
was successfully jailbroken as soon as I got it several years back, and it
continues to work well. I did this because I knew that I wanted it to be a
long term network node for streaming video that would most of the time not
be in a format that it would like i.e. dot AVI. The jailbreak allowed X-Box
Media Centre to be loaded on there, and that plays anything. Also, I can
make it use any shared directory on any machine on the network, as its
streaming source. All works very well. However, my requirement for using the
Touch to display these photos, is a one-off - at least for the moment - so
I really didn't want to mess about with the OS on it.

CopyTrans was one of the pieces of software that I tried, and it works
without the device being jailbroken, but in order to get a properly working
version, you have to pay for it.

Thanks for your input anyway, and I will give it some consideration.

Yeah, the Linux dress code sucks and is a known problem:
<http://www.zdnet.com/sandals-and-ponytail-set-cramp-linux-1139248447/>
At least you can fake part of the uniform:
<https://www.google.com/search?tbm=isch&q=fake+beard>
Sandals are cheap and you can borrow the kids bicycle. Don't forget
the pony tail. If you can't make the transition, there's always the
Unix UniSuit:
<http://www.netfunny.com/rhf/jokes/91q2/unisuit.html>

Once properly attired, it's now safe to run Linux.

Don't know, but if it uses the dock connector, then probably. There is a pin
on the connector that determines what has been connected, by looking for the
resistance value attached to that pin. Different devices / cables use
different resistor values, and as long as the feature or connection is
supported, then it should be correctly identified by any Apple mobile
device. For instance, I have a universal AV cable, and that is correctly
detected by both my iPod and my iPad.
