Who, lurking here, would be posting fraudulent information, in my
name, from <ci.fresno.ca.us> ??

My lawyers want to know.

If I catch your ass I guarantee maximum pain and suffering, and
financial ruin.

It would explain a lot, though. No one with any self-respect or who
values their reputation in any way would post the kind of crap that
appears here under Jim's name.

What, where, when? I don't recall seeing anything suspicious, but I
guess I'll have to start checking your headers for the Cox[knocker]
CATV path, so I can reasonable assume it's you posting.

It wasn't a site where you or I would lurk... a scurrilous site, where
someone was clearly trying to do me harm by posting my telephone
number and E-mail address.

I hope I am able to track him... I kid you not, I will destroy him.

Jim,

I was sent this today. If the outfit is on the up and up it might be
a solution to your problem:

Those good folks over at the Institute for Spam and
Internet Public Policy <http://www.isipp.com/index.php
have a really nifty idea to get back at those pesky
spoofers - people who use your domain as the 'from' address
in their spam.

ISIPP is offering a new service with which they will help
you to register your domain name for trademark protection.
Once you have your domain trademarked, anybody who spoofs
it is guilty of trademark infringement! And if you have a
hankering to really make them suffer, it's much easier to
sue someone for trademark infringement than it is to sue
someone under CAN-SPAM, plus anybody can do it (CAN-SPAM
limits legal action to the FTC, state attorney generals,
and ISPs).
Kind Regards,

I already have a patent attorney, so I can have him do it...
trademarks are dirt cheap.

Why don't you just start digitally signing your messages? Try PGP 8.1.
Hand out your public key, and folks (who care) can tell if messages
are from you or not.

That's not the issue. A person posted using my E-mail address, so I'm
now starting to get spam, to that previously non-public address.

There are *only* 14 authors on my list ;-)

They are generally off-the-wall-leftists, or rabidly anti-American...
and then there's the dumb-as-a-stump-pretender-to-be-expert, PB ;-)

Who was the first name to come to mind when I pondered who might do
something like that, but you said it was posted out of Canada.
That's not necessarily the case, though. He may have used a proxy

And since Jim thinks that I am both an off-the-wall-leftist, and
rabidly anti-American, you can get some idea of his grasp of political
reality. His electronics is okay though - if not in the Barry Gilbert

And if you do manage to catch him/her, please try to have Mike Wallace (60
Minutes) cover it. The problem with spoofing, phishing, aliasing, spamming,
and the rest of this new crop of cowardly fungi is their perception that
they can't be caught. It would serve many of us well to have a public
viewing of them being prosecuted. Fear is the best motivator (demotivator
?) for cretin types. Good luck and keep us informed.
