In the last few years many of the local businesses have purchased a
standardized neon sign which is a box around the word OPEN. But in the
last few weeks I have seen a few instances of an OPEN sign that's made
with red LEDs for the word OPEN and with blue LEDs for some curved lines
vaguely reminiscent of the Nike swoosh. I expect that a similar sign
will pop up in your neighborhood store soon. Keep your eyes open for
them.

The neon OPEN sign is nice looking and seems to last a long time, but
I'm guessing it's not cheap and is fragile and breaks easily. It needs
a high voltage transformer and well insulated wiring. OTOH the LED OPEN
sign is probably nothing more than a piece of circuit board with little
else but LEDs on it, and a wall wart. Very likely a lot cheaper than
the neon sign.

BTW, the following article about sums up my experience with the lifetime
of LEDs. Scroll down to the paragraph 'ODD LED' The hundred thousand
hour lifetime figure so often quoted is _not_ what I see them lasting.

This URL has a pic of what they look like. Except they aren't neon,
they're rows of red and blue LEDs.
