National LM321 -- When did they start reusing part numbers?

I had some time when my office computer was being involuntarily upgraded, so
I browsed through some old data books. In the National Semi 198x Op Amp
Databook there's a part called an LM321 Precision Preamplifier. It looks
pretty interesting for one application I have so I wrote myself a note and
today I finally got to look it up. According to National Semi's web site
(and Digikey concurs) the LM321 is just a tiny, low-power, single supply Op
Amp -- not even functionally close to the Precision Preamplifier in the old
book. My home copy of the data books agree. The 1992 Op Amp book shows the
LM321 Precision Preamplifier and the 2004 Analog book shows the single
supply, low power op amp with the designation LM321.

What happened? Where did the PP-part go? Or was it never really
manufactured?

TIA
Norm
