Microwave blocks tv remote control

I have a panasonic microwave in my kitchen, and a panasonic tv in my living
room about 30' away and around a corner--but with an open double-wide door
(but not in a straight line). Whenever we use the microwave, the tv remote
is useless--no on/off, channel or vol controls work.

Is there any way to prevent this?
Would it happen the same way if the appliances weren't both panasonic?

If you close the doors or otherwise keep light from getting to the TV

will it work?

Some light sources are high frequency and will inhibit remote
operation - typically those screw in replacement spiral fluorescent
lamps - that shouldn't be the case with a microwave . . .

There are two other possibilities - RFI created by the microwave
getting in the TV's circuitry (powerline filter might help there) or
microwave energy affecting the remote or TV - in which case there may
be a serious health hazard as well.

Fool around some and see what it takes to cure it or change the
symptoms. Shroud the microwave with some light barrier and see if
that helps, close the doors, plug the TV into an outlet on a different
circuit, try an aluminum foil shroud if you suspect microwave leakage
- bear in mind the microwave may overheat if you restrict its cooling
air flow.

It is unlikely the brand of TV has any effect in this problem - your
microwave come with a remote?

I think you are on to it. After reading some messages from radio people,
the remotes operate at 2.45 ghz, which is about where the microwave oven
operates. So it's probably either some spilled RFI frequency from the oven,
or noise being thrown back into the 110 v circuits. There's no door on the
kitchen/lr "door"---its an archway. I will try some aluminum foil around the
tv and/or oven, take the oven outside on an extension cord to see if it's
air-borne rf, and then maybe a filter if not too many $$$. It's not just
that they are both panasonic, since it also affects the remote on my dish
network box.

It's an RF remote? Well... heh... batteries probably wouldn't be the
problem then, eh?

That's something worth mentioning, btw... most remotes use IR, so that
would be assumed unless you mention otherwise...

I assumed it was an infrared remote control on the TV . . . that uses
high frequency (40khz or so) pulsed IR light. Not in the GHZ range or
anywhere close. Never saw a TV with a RF remote on it.

I have one remote that does use high frequency RF (I'd guess around
900 MHZ from the size of the loop antenna). It is plagued by all
manner of ghosts from cell phones and garage door openers to the
microwave oven. It was originally used in a satellite dish
positioning system.

Does your TV have an RF or IR remote on it?

I used to get the same problem when one of those Philips brand "Energysaver"

globes was turned on in the living room.

Caused me a major headache trying to figure out why it wouldn't work all of
a sudden
for no apparent reason, and only late in the day.

Is it only happening when the microwave is on or perhaps a light in the
kitchen
or something else is on at the same time ??
