There won't be so many shorts once summer is over. Except in Bermuda, of
course. ;)

Hmmm, could those shorts fail "Open" ???

OK, when a LED dies normally, would it blow like a fuse or would it
become a conductor?

Neither.

For an LED operated within its specifications, normal end-of-life is
defined as occurring when its output decays to, or past, a particular
point.

Any other type of failure is abnormal.

the flashlight is very much weaker than it used to be."

I think so, since that's where recombination liberates photons.

From the dozen results I found, they didn't talk about what happened
when LED died. They only talked about how to prevent LEDs from failing
early....

My question actually made headline in Google Search.

Not true, since they delved into the causes attributed to LED failure.

Perhaps the ones you missed.

I just wanna know what would happen when a LED failed normally. I don't
care about the wear-out or prevention models.

You misunderstood again. I meant there was no result that addressed my
question.

I guess I should ask/google the same question again maybe a year later.

When an LED fails normally, its light output decays to a point which
is no longer considered satisfactory.

Greetings John,
Don't you think Mr Chang is just a troll? I'm pretty sure he is. His
LED end of life question was asnwered such that even a non-native
speaker of english with a 3rd grade education level would have
understood it. It is obvious from the answers that the normal failure
mode of LEDs is that light output drops to unacceptable levels. And if
Mr Chang really wanted to know if LEDs fail open or closed when
connected to a source of too high voltage and current he certainly
could have found this out empirically in a short period of time. I'm
pretty sure that modern production techniques are such that random
sampling of a few LEDs from several makers would be sufficient to give
a reliable indication of the result of driving LEDs with too much
voltage and current. I know from my own personal experience over the
years that every LED I have ever caused to fail has failed in the same
way, whether from being used for too many hours or from being supplied
with too much voltage and current.

Mr. Field, maybe you could write a thesis on death of LED and earn a
MSc/PhD in Electronic Engineering if not Material Science... :)

Anyway, when I had the time and the right mood, I might read those
technical papers, looking for words similar in meaning to "death of LED".
