Take a capacitor rated for the voltage in question. Place this cap in
series with your AC volt meter to block the DC component. Measure the
AC component and that gives you the ripple voltage. A bit of math will
give percentages, and all else you need to know.

I got a Samsung PCN5425R. It turns on then beeps a few times.. turns
off.. does this cycle over and over.. I've noticed the heater
elements on all three monitors are on. I suspect flyback.. no
output. gonna check it on a HV probe meter tommarow... Does anyone
know the part # on the flyback or have access to a pdf for the service
manual?

This is something circa 1982. Consisted of a largish, for hand held,
camera and a matching VHS recording pack carried on a shoulder strap. It
ran off a NiCd battery pack. Also came with a mains power station that
could recharge the NiCd pack and distribute the wideo signal

When it was last used, the camera worked, aka image on the sperate CRT
in the hand held bit and on the vcr outlets on recording pack and base
station(?)

I am now trying to run the camera standalone, but think I'm stumped as
it requires certain signals from the recording pack. Both the camera and
the mains station had standby settings, which i suspect responded to a
button on the recording pack. Unfortunately the recording pack has been
binned, but the internal sockets kept for camera and mains station.

Also have been unable to find anything helpful on the internet about
this unit. Even the manual floggers have given up trying to make out
they have manuals.

Basically looking for cluebies to understand it better.

The mains station has a 11 wire plug and when powered on, provides the
following voltages on the following wires
red -18.7V
purple -19.1 V
black 0.0 V
light blue +2.5 V

The camera has an ten wire plug with wire colours matching the first ten
colours of the mainsd station plug.

If the black and red wires and joined to their matching colours on the
camera plug, a relay clicks in the mains station, but voltages alter
significantly.

Red -18.1V to -8.1V
black 0.0V
light blue +2.5V to +7.4V (not connected across)

Seven of the remaining 8 wires on the camera plug then return -1.2V. the
8th(gray) is 0.0V.

But, the power led on the camera is still unlit.

Tried disassembling the camera to see if I could find out where the
wires went internally, but it requires compled board on each side to be
removed and disonnects as the cable entry is really buried underneath
the main camera.

Would like to get the camera working as it has auto iris and auto focus.

In my experience with CD players, it`s not the dust on the actual lens
that is the major problem, but a coating of dust or film of some kind
of tarnish on the angled mirrors beneath the lens. Not easy to get to in
most cases.

it's only a few hundred volts, a normal 10x probe should be fine. Up to a
couple thousand, a simple resistor divider will work ok.

Sometimes there's a bleeder resistor on the output of the supply.

Often, it's made up of several series resistors.
Sometimes you can measure the ripple across the bottom resistor and
do the math. Or just install another resistor in the bottom
of the bleeder chain.

Or just unhook the cap, drive it with a pulse generator and look at it on
the scope. The shape of the waveform will tell you the capacitance
and ESR of the cap. If the cap is good and the diodes are good, there
ain't much else to look for.

Well, I went ahead and picked up an "as-is" Blu-Ray player and,
wouldn't you know it, after repairing its mechanical problems (all
having to do with the front panel), it won't play Blu-Ray disks.

It's an old Samsung BD-P1000 (did these things really sell for
$1000?).

When I first tried it, it would play traditional DVD's just fine, but
wouldn't play any Blu-Ray discs at all. It can't seem to find
the starting point on these discs and after about a minute of
seeking and focusing, finally gives up, spits them out, and
displays "The disk cannot be played." on the screen.

I've updated the firmware to the latest version available but
that didn't help.

Being a hobbyist I only have the simplest of test equipment.
I did have a look at the laser assembly - it seems to have
two, side-by-side lasers: a (conventional?) red, and a blue.
With a Blu-Ray disc inserted I can see the blue laser from
the label side of the spinning disc - it is seeking and refocusing
but always gives up.

The other thing I noticed is that the disc spins much, much
faster when it's a Blu-Ray - I assume this is normal.

I'm thinking that I don't have much of a chance of getting
this working.

Appreciate any suggestions (even if they are to simply
trash the thing.)


Most likely a bad pickup (sold as a complete mechanism). Samsung disc
players have traditionally had pickup problems. Like most dvd players, this
likely puts it out of the economical repair range.

There are different versions of this unit - probably all virtually the
same - but you'll need to have the full model number with the X/XAA or
whatever suffix and call Andrews Electronics at 800-289-0300. The list price
is apparently about 288.00 .

If you're with a shop, you can maybe get dealer cost, maybe about 30 to 40
percent off.

RF cabling with F connectors is broadband, carries multiple
channels, and is compatible with multiple drops and
both NTSC and ATSC (digital) video + audio.
Splitters are passive devices, and automatic gain
control at each receiver makes it all work.

RCA usually is NTSC composite video, so you'd need
three cables (stereo sound R, L, and video) to replace
RF. You'll only ever have one channel on it.
Splitting or multiple-room drops will probably require
powered amplification (SOME systems might have
switchable termination, but most don't).

S-video is usually NTSC luma (baseband analog) video
and NTSC chroma on two separate wires. So, with
stereo sound, it takes four cables and you only get one
channel. Again, splitting requires multiple amplifier output
channels.

The only one of these three options that will work for digital
broadcast and tolerate single-cable runs with taps or branches is
the regular old F connector RF/CATV. You're best off
sticking wth it.

I feel like I know exactly what you're thinking, because that is
what I used to think too! But I kept meeting people who told me,
"I'm so glad I had it done" that at one point, it was the next
thing to try, to see if I could recover from my chronic health problems.

I don't doubt that you feel better now you have had them removed, but I
really wonder how much of that is because you *expected* to feel better,

I didn't expect to notice *any* improvement right away, and I'd
never heard of that happening. But it did. After the painkillers
wore off and I got a night's sleep, the very next day I got a definite,
very-hard-to-ignore boost in mental acuity, and to use an overused
saying, "felt like a fog had been lifted off me". Nothing else had
changed in my life that could have accounted for that.

I had put off having it done for about 10 years due to the cost,
ordeal of it, and because I never had anything objective to latch
onto to feel confident that it would result in any kind of noticeable
improvement. Other people I've talked to don't get any, but they're
usually still "glad they had it done."

"YMMV" is the simplest answer I can give to you, and there's
not much of any way anyone can tell you in advance what your
experience would be.

I'm interested to know, not
least because I have an amalgam filling in just about every 4 - 8 tooth,
both sides, top and bottom, and have had for 40 years or more since I
was a kid, and they were the 'norm'. Although my memory, particularly
short-term, is not as good as it was, otherwise, I would have rated my
health as 'OK', and not any worse than I would expect for a mid 50's man
with my location and lifestyle.

As compared to say, other people who also have amalgam fillings? ;-)
Unfortunately, that's the rub of it. Heavy metal toxicity is usually
very sneaky. It sinks in gradually, and you can't tell it's there, and
I think for almost all cases, it never gets bad enough to cause acute
symptoms that doctors can diagnose.

But then I heard of a woman (friend of a friend) who was suffering
from MS for many years, and after a lot of other things, she
tried getting her mercury fillings removed. And then she simply
recovered! So who knows? There's no proof that the mercury removal
did it, but she had no other explanation for it. (Miracle?)

BTW, I regret that I cannot reveal personal details about other
people, to protect both them and dentists who remove mercury fillings.
Dentists are still persecuted by the ADA and other organizations in
some areas.

have you tried replacing the ribbon cable from the p-up to the pcb?
hairline cracks can form. Given this material is unlikely to cost more
than a couple of dollars it's worth a go.
if not; well you can still use it as a standard dvd player :)
 
The time has come to fess up to the fact that I didn't study the
situation as I should have. I had success, I took it.

This past weekend I opened the unit again to figure out just what was
fixed, and I have to agree that the springs sagging was not the
issue. As was mentioned here, the drive spindle and the head are both
on the floating carriage, and the springs were not bad enough to let
the disk drag. My only conclusion then has to be that the spring work
moved the ribbon cable connection, in such a way as to "fix" a poor
connection. There just isn't any other explanation. I did pull it
all apart to look for whatever and it still works. So, I guess we
leave it at that.

I just wanted to set the record straight on what I had originally
stated and that it apparently was not quite accurate. The bottom line
was that the unit then worked, but not for the perceived reason.
