Quite right. There is a god and she is an atheist.

The "US" does not exist as a single person and as such can not make a
"distinction" in the manner you mean. The problem appears to stem from
people rightly or wrongly making that distinction. Even in what used to me
a much more secular, tolerant, Europe we suffer from Islamophobia to such
an extent that it no longer seems to matter which part of Asia you come
from, if you look "Muslim" you are to be treated as suspect until proven
otherwise.
The US is a juggernaut. No one really controls or directs it - any
appearance that they do is an illusion. You can divert it slightly by
throwing your body under the wheels but it still goes in the same general
direction and barely notices your sacrifice.

I see. You think that we've isolated ourselves and that we're
pursuing a strictly military solution to the problem.

You are insane.
I seem to recall references to "Shock and Awe".

Of course. What you don't hear about is the clandestine work that's
being done. You're not supposed to.
---

Doesn't sound like the cops
to me - unless it's the nutjob US cops who shoot everything in sight.
---
Yup, we've got some bad ones, same like everywhere.
"Some bad ones" is more than a little disingenuous. The nutjob that made
the quoted words famous is supposed to be the leader of the free world--he's
not supposed to be one of the "bad ones". It really robs him and his
mission of credibility to act like some sort of irresponsible cowboy.

---
In the first place, we were talking about 'cops' which, in my view,
refers to civilian officers of the law.

You're obviously referring to the President of the United States of
America, who is a civilian but, nonetheless, the Commander-in-Chief
of the armed forces of the United States of America, which places
him in a role quite different from that played by a common 'cop',
and to try to liken him to a cop strikes me as being a little
disingenuous.

You may disagree with his policies and those of his staff, but the
fact remains that, for better or for worse, those policies will be
carried out and there's very little you or I can do to stop that
from happening.
It's fair enough that us "foreigners" can't do much about Bush and his
policies, but it's quite telling that you think that *you*, as an
American citizen, can't do anything either.

I suggest that a letter to the White House or an email to:

http://answers.firstgov.gov/cgi-bin/gsa_ict.cfg/php/enduser/ask.php

might be appropriate if you can spare the time to make your thoughts
known to those who matter.

You haven't a clue what Jihad really means. If you understood...........

" Jihad, sometimes spelled Jahad, Jehad, Jihaad, Djehad or Cihad, (Arabic:
????? ?ih?d) is an Islamic term, from the Arabic root ?hd ("to exert
utmost effort, to strive, struggle"), which connotes a wide range of
meanings: anything from an inward spiritual struggle to attain perfect
faith to a political or military struggle "

All religions seem to have these issues. In Christianity we have the
conflict
between the values of the Old and New Testaments for example. It's my
understanding that a similar situation arises in Islam between the early (
almost liberal ) and late ( reactionary ) teachings of Mohammed.

Isn't the biggest problem the fact that Mohammed was illiterate and wrote no
books?

Quote:
========================================
Since Muhammad and his several hundred companions were completely illiterate
(could not read or write) and Muhammad had a poor memory; thus, his
companions memorized for him the Quranic verses they plagiarized/concocted.
But in the battle of Yamamah, almost all his companions were killed and the
original Quranic verses were lost forever and was never compiled in writing
before Muhammad himself was killed by food poisoning in 632 A.D. by a Jewish
slave, who said, "If you are a true Apostle, Allah would have saved you".
Caliph Abu Bakr (632-634A.D.) then entrusted Zayed Ibn Thabit to compile the
Quran, from memories of Muhammad's illiterate wives, concubines, slaves, and
a few contacts; who claimed to have heard Muhammad and his companions utter
various verses. Zayed managed to gather an estimated 7,900 verses. But this
first compilation of the Quran, with numerous contradictions, ridicule,
confusions, and errors, created a lot of trouble and huge problems arose
over the years. Under the caliphate of Uthman (644-656 A.D.), he was
compelled to withdraw all the distributed, handwritten copies of the Qurans
and burnt them. Zayed was again ordered for the second time, to recompile
and re-edit the Quran more sensibly and convincingly from his original
Quran, kept with Hafsa (Muhammad's widow). Zayed did the best he could in
re-editing the Quran and more than 2,000 contradictory, confusing, erroneous
and illogical verses were abrogated (cancelled), some were replaced, and
others added/borrowed to make sense of the cancellations/replacements.
========================================
I don't know the truth of this but if true it explains a lot. It would seem
that these Caliphs were like Saul of Tarsus in that they virtually
re-invented the religion.
Intriguing.

Oh, come on, you know perfectly well that one anecdote (8 years old, no
less) does not a "trait" make. However, this anecdote is useless. A white
woman was recently (in the past month) dragged to death behind a pickup
truck, too. By your logic, US society hates all whites and all women as
well.

I'm not saying that racism doesn't exist in the US--*of course* it does,
nobody has claimed it hasn't. It has improved since the 60s, but not as
much as it should. The problem is labelling. Once you label a large group
of people, and begin to talk about members of that group as if they were
only the label you've given them ("All blacks are...", "All whites are...",
"All Americans are...", "All Europeans are...", "All Muslims are...") then
you cease any intelligent discussion on any issues related to those people,
and nothing but bickering ensues. Some Americans do it, but I've also
noticed a large fraction of the American *and* non-American participants in
this thread do it as well. But then, I guess the way that some people go
out of their way to pick a fight rather than discuss issues without threats
and name-calling, it shouldn't surprise me.
