Interchangeable LCD's

I am interested in getting information about the interchangeability of
displays in notebook computers. Does anyone know whether LCD panels
for use in notebook computer use a DDC channel or some other mechanism
to identify themselves to the operating system for driver
configuration?

They are totally non-interchangeable. Even models made by the same
manufacturer will have different connectors from year to year.
