of his stuff. All he cares about is convincing himself that
he's not barking mad to think it's worth $N million. And
perhaps persuading the case worker that he's not too mad to
be allowed to keep caring for his family...

If only! I've been trying that at a couple of facilities with zero
success for the last couple of years. The usual (lame?) reason why
they won't let me take anything is that they are paid to dispose of
it responsibly - if I take it away they have no control over what I
may or may not do with it.
They are not as easy going as they used to be, but I know who to ask
and when.
So items that could keep me busy (and maybe even sane) and perhaps
find a new lease on life are instead shredded and exported (not
necessarily in that order) at best or put in landfills. What a
wonderful society we've created!

Lucky! I don't have contacts. I did 'meet' a guy through the nz.comp
newsgroup a couple years back who sent me a 750w PC PSU when mine failed and
I couldn't afford a replacement without saving up. He volunteered at an
ewaste facility and said that the number of computers less than 3 of 4 years
old going through there was criminal. Unfortunately he lived at the other
end of the country and it was a one-off thing.

My back is so bad I can't stand up long enough to do food prep or vacuum the
house. Heck it even hurts like hell to stand and pee! (I can walk not too
bad most of the time, just standing without moving much is tough). I'm on
welfare and *very* poor. I used to enjoy cooking and could make my money go
further and eat reasonably well using my cooking skills, prepping large
batches and preezing portions. Now I eat processed plastic-packaged frozen
crap mostly as I can't stand at the bench / stove long enough to prepare
food (and the dishwasher I picked up cheaply and repaired well enough to
wash plates and cutlery doesn't handle pots and pans so clean-up's a bitch).
Such a shame that I can't go through ewaste and fix what I can to barter for
a bit of housework instead of it all going to waste, the rich getting richer
and the poor getting poorer. :-/
