How rising groundwater is caused by climate change...

Mankind just needs to pack it up and move away from the coastlines because there\'s nothing that can be done about this one. Of course all the corruption and ignorance in modern politics think it can be fixed by throwing HUGE amounts of money at it- just not going to happen. And there\'s much more to it than flooding, there is also a major issue of release of buried chemical contamination.

\"The Earth is a watery place. But just how much water exists on, in, and above our planet? About 71 percent of the Earth\'s surface is water-covered, and the oceans hold about 96.5 percent of all Earth\'s water. Water also exists in the air as water vapor, in rivers and lakes, in icecaps and glaciers, in the ground as soil moisture and in aquifers, and even in you and your dog.\"

Big chunks of Saugus Massachusetts are at or below sea level, not a

And a lot of coastal areas are sinking because of groundwater pumping.
New Orleans is sinking. And Miami. And the California Central Valley.

Is that actual sinking or what they call subsidence- or compaction of the surface soil to fill the voids left by removed groundwater. Everyone thinks the Central Valley is sinking, but in reality the satellite data shows that whole tectonic plate upon which California rests is coming out of the ground, rising in elevation, because of all the water weight that has been removed. It is now estimated that the subsidence in places like the Central Valley has left the soil so compacted and therefore less permeable, it would take thousands of years to recharge what they have left of an aquifer there.

Big Ag is growing crazy stuff in the Central Valley for export:
cotton, wheat, almonds, even rice. And slurping up the groundwater,
and polluting the soil with salt and selenium and stuff as the water
evaporates. This is just about big money and big political influence.

This is self-limiting.

The New Orleans pumps are legendary. They\'ll pump bricks and logs and
small boats. They were originally steam powered and then graduated to
25 Hz electric power, which needed its own power plants packed with
obsolete gear.

And New Orleans has its own genteel culture of corruption. The Katrina
deluge was a man-made disaster.

Big chunks of Saugus Massachusetts are at or below sea level, not a
smart place to build housing, in a swamp with big tides and storms.

And a lot of coastal areas are sinking because of groundwater pumping.
New Orleans is sinking. And Miami. And the California Central Valley.

Federal flood insurance lets people keep building and rebuilding in
places where flooding is natural.

I remember an article about the pumps in an engineering magazine. These
aren\'t your basement sump pump. Of course, you have to maintain them if
you expect them to work but Providence is Providence.

Good book: Rising Tide by Barry.

According to that article, they\'re still using the old pump drives and generators, which have been refurbished.

Let me suggest that maybe low-lying coastal plains have been flooding
for some time now.

Something about draining swamps for housing as I recall - Florida
springs to mind.

Not to mention a possible side effect of fracking, as well as water
pumped underground to release oil, water sucked out of aquifers, and so on.

Complicated problems do not have single, simple, causes.

Could I interest you in some Doggerland real estate?

https://education.nationalgeographic.org/resource/doggerland

Earth has never been static, but people shriek and panic when anything
changes.

From the Sciencedirect link above:

\"Over 50% of China’s coast is artificial, representing defended coast
and/or claimed land.\"

You have the same problem in U.S., especially the east coast. Catastrophes like this:
https://www.nydailynews.com/opinion/jfk-fliers-owe-jamaica-bay-wildlife-article-1.2938036
This played out time and time again with these jackasses building airports in the middle of critical bird habitat, marsh or wetland. And then they have the gall to turn around and vilify the birds for disrupting their operations. Like DUH....

Not unreasonably.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Sea_flood_of_1953

It killed 2,551 people. Changes in sea level that might lead to another such disaster are worth worrying about.

From the Sciencedirect link above:

\"Over 50% of China’s coast is artificial, representing defended coast and/or claimed land.\"

There\'s about 6 metres of sea level rise tied up in the Greenland ice sheet, and and another 3.3 metres in the West Antarctic ice sheet.

Both seem to have the potential to slide off into the ocean fairly quickly, as happened with other ice sheets at the end of the last ice age.

The interesting stuff happens at the bottom of the ice sheet, where it is hard to see what\'s going on. The GRACE satellites tell us that both ice sheets are losing mass at the moment, though not enough to worry about.
