How do I stop volt spikes from switching?

"N.O.Y.B."
The "spikes" are not really spikes at all but rather RFI crackling,

** The radiated noise from a switch arcing is broad band - from audio
all the way to VHF.

I bet your co-ax lead is not making effective ground contact at one end.

Do a continuity test to chassis with the lead removed from each item in
turn.

Maybe not.

I don't know much, how do I do a continuity test to chassis? I do have a
decent multimeter, if that helps.

** Does it have a continuity beeper ?

Probe between the open end shield and metal work of the item near the
socket at the other end.

Try the ohms range too - the reading should be under 1 ohm.

If all continuities show fine - then the co-ax is not the problem.
