Might be easiest to swap your mains-powered PC power supply
for a 12VDC powered version. Then use as big a car/RV battery
as you need (or can afford) in "float" mode (on constant trickle
charge from mains).

Are power drops REALLY "destroying" your PC? Or are
you just losing data because you aren't saving frequently
enough for your environment?

You don't need a surge protector if you are using a UPS between the AC
line and the PC. The easiest way to make a 'homemade' UPS is to buy a
good deep cycle 12V battery and put a 12V to 120VAC inverter on it
that's high enough capacity to run your equipment without overload, and
some excess capacity. Then charge the battery with a charger that can
handle the total current drain on the battery plus an additional 50
percent or so. In the commercial setting, this setup is called a
battery backup and rectifier. Also depending on your current
requirements, you may want to get a hefty battery, such as ones used in
the marine or truck environments.
