Is there a version of the LM317 that works up to 10A? How about up to
5A?

The traditional way to get more than an amp or two with these IC
regulators is to use the chip to control a power transistor. I used to
have a collection of National Semiconductor app notes on the subject, but
it's gone with the flood. Newer power supplies usually use switching
regulators for higher efficiency. Have you tried one of the big catalog
sites, like newark.com?

** Correction.

Look up the LM338 K.

TO3, 6 to 7 amps.

Look up the LT1038.

Thanks.

Looks like the LT1038 is obsolete/discontinued.

I'll look into the suggestions from Stephen and Phil

National Semiconductor's datasheet (LM117.pdf) says the LM317K is
limited to 1.5A. TO-3 package

http://www.national.com/ds.cgi/LM/LM117.pdf

Any other vendor produce a 10A version?
