Getting soldering tip 'going'

Hi all, I recently bought yet another small replacement tip for my trusty
Antex CS soldering iron. However, unlike the last few I've used, the solder
will not stick to the end.

Any ideas? It's unusable as it is. I've tried putting a bit of flux on it
and that hasn't helped, also left it on for an hour or so with no success.

What does the tip look like? color, texture Is that an iron plated

tip?

Leaving it on in an untinned condition is usually not a good idea.

You can file it, but that wrecks any plating it may have. With
stubborn tips I take flux and work it into a piece of steel wool and
brush the hot tip with the wool and tin it as soon as it comes clean.

With new tips I wrap a piece of solder around the end before I plug it
in so I know when it is hot and tin it as soon as I can.

It's darker than the rest of it - iron plated sounds about right

Leaving it on in an untinned condition is usually not a good idea.

The iron plated tips have a further plating of something that takes

solder well. You've probably already had it on long enough to oxidize
it beyond tinning.

The steel wool/flux method may be the only thing that will work and
preserve the iron coating. The iron must be hot while you do it and
be sure to tin it immediately after.
