There are so many British murder mysteries, I'm surprised there are

The consistently excellent Radio 4 programme "More or Less"

The answer(s) were entertaining, and included comparisons

I do think Hollywood needs to re-examine their glorification of gun violence.
They are like free advertising for the NRA.

Shakespeare wasn't exactly all Kumbaya and people loving each other,
either and his works are now considered one of the heights of the
literature canon of Western civilization.

I like the comedies. 12th Night, Much Ado About Nothing, like that.

A TV set can be good once in a while, as long as you don't watch "TV".

There are some actors who are or were big into guns and martial arts
in their personal lives, too. Steven Seagal, Chuck Norris, etc.

Problem is the actors whose real life beliefs about firearms and
violence are congruent with their on-screen behavior tend to be
terrible actors.

It's finally easier to train a liberal-pacifist actor to look like a
bad-ass firing guns on screen doing something they'd never normally be
into than it is to train a Steven Seagal or Chuck Norris how to act.
That's actors job, though. They play roles and characters that they
aren't.

Bad actors like Steven Seagal and Ronald Reagan tend to end up
confused about where their role starts and "they" begin.

Canonical examples of that from an earlier era:
John Wayne and Charlton Heston.

An exception to the rule was Clint Eastwood who tended to be pretty good
at the (rather limited) range of roles he took.

In Gran Torino back in 2008 he was almost playing a caricature of
himself as a habitually ticked-off grumpy geriatric right-winger.

There's pretty limited evidence art, literature, games, or music (media)
has much influence on violent or anti-social behavior.

Violent and anti-social people sometimes tend to be attracted to that
kind of material but the anti-social behavior tends to come first, prior
to the attraction.

When taken in aggregate the media preferences of e.g. mass shooters show
no clear patterns. Some were into violent media and music and games, and
many weren't. it's common for mass shooters to have little interest in
video games or film.

One of the Virginia Tech shooter's favorite songs was a rock song called
"Shine" with very positive and uplifting lyrics by the standards of the
genre, he'd listen to it for many hours each day in the weeks and months
prior to him shooting a bunch of students to death.

I don't recall saying that.

I do recall some big-name leftist stars who have fired guns

If you took a large poll of all the things Mainstream America said
they would prefer to see in films Hollywood produces, and then
they went and tried to make films like that and sell them, they

It's very much the equivalent of design by committee. Even the

People make money selling cigarettes and toxic junk food and

"television" and "TV" are terms that refer to the veiwing act not the
hardware on which you view it. You actually prove that. You "watch
TV" every time you view other than computer related media on your PC
(hard to word that exactly right, but you know what I mean). The
simple fact that you now have the network bandwidth and computer
power (and software) to perform that act utilizing your computer does
not negate the fact that it is the same act as when you had a TV and
tuned into a channel to watch an 'aired' program.

The motives for murder in media are usually far too sophisticated and
cerebral compared to the standard motives in the real world: drugs, some
pitiful amount of money, some young woman who's not worth responding to
phone calls from, much less killing anyone over.

The overwhelming majority of violent criminals are dumb as rocks and
habitually do stuff like try to mail someone a pipe bomb in an old box

"mysteries" like that for the police to solve are pretty common but
don't make for very entertaining television except for the dark-humor kind.
