Ferrite toroid

Can anyone help me identify a toroid material. My experience with ferrites
and the like is limited to "traditional" materials ie dull grey, sintered
construction, iron powder or ferrite materials or some combination of stuff
chosen on a trial and error basis. What works best gets chosen. I have a
"ferrite" here that works really well, has a small air gap to stop
saturation and it is made of a spiral of something that looks like chrome,
very brittle and if a piece is broken off it is maybe 6 or so thou thick,
shiny just the same as if you peel chrome off something that's old and
rusty. It's not at all what I would expect it to be.

The manufacturer tells me there is nothing secret in the material and that
it is bought off the shelf. They reckon their money is in cutting it. They
are charging me $500 per piece for a 3 inch toroid with a 1.5 inch hole
thats about 3 inches high. This seems to be a huge ammount to me so I want
to look at sorting it myself.

Sounds like a tape-wound core. They use materials such as Hypersil or
Deltamax for the tape. This is a special alloy, like you say it looks
like a combionation of nickel or chrome, etc.
