Feel silly ordering one part

I need an MPSA13 NPN Darlington transistor to make a repair on my
HeathKit weather station.

I've found plenty of places that sell them, but I feel silly ordering a
single 39 cent part. Can't seem to find the part, locally.

Has anyone else ordered one single part like that? Do companies frown
on ordering a single part, or is there a company that specializes in
filling tiny orders?

Check Mouser -- they seem to welcome small orders.

I've taken to keeping a spreadsheet of all the stuff I'm gonna need in
the next few months, adding to it as I find the need. When I run across
that thing that I _must_ have _now_ I order the whole shebang.

Depending on the application you can usually manufacture a darlington
from two non-darlilngtons. Look up the specs and the application
requirements and hack two transistors together.

Use ECG46 or NTE 46 substitute instead of MPSA13 and may your local
electronic part store has it.{ not R/S }

Surely someone has a single MPS-A13 they can send him for a couple of
bucks to cover costs?

I don't have this particular device but I do have nearly 300 off
MPS-A12 which has Vce = 20V (compare to MPS-A13 = 30V) and dc gain =
20,000 min @ 10mA (compare to MPS-A13 dc gain = 5000 min) if any help.
However, I am in Australia.

PS. Anybody interested in taking them off my hands?

It's probably best to buy more than one, if it's a cheap item, just in case
the first one is a dud or gets damaged by another circuit fault.

If this is an NPN Darlington, could you make one out of two 2N2222s or the
like?

If they list Qty 1 price, they sell Qty 1. Of course, a larger order
would be welcome.
But I know what you mean.

MPSA13 at 5 for 50-cents.
And US shipping is a flat US$6 "for most orders".

Why not consider ordering - say - some solder, solder wick, etc... along
with your part. If you do much repairing, those items won't go to waste.
Many companies will sell AN item, but you'll pay either in shipping which
won't make it worth it and/or perhaps a packing fee. Some charge x amount
for orders under a certain value - not counting shipping. I believe one
company charges like $5 for orders under $25. Whatever the shipping is,
won't change much (if at all) between shipping a transistor or a transistor
and a couple spools of solder and solder wick along with it. Seems kinda
silly to give them your money when you could turn it into items you could
use - such as mentioned above. Make a list of items you don't have but could
use or running short on. Also consider perhaps resistor kits, capacitor
kits, transistors which are pretty common, etc. Perhaps even some tuner
cleaner or some other chemicals needed in repairs. That way you can kill
"three" birds with one stone. Get the part(s) you need, save cash rather
than throw it away for service fees by getting things you need, stock up.
Don't forget, these companies are out to make a "profit" - it is what keeps
them in business to "supply" those parts. Though they appreciate a small
order, it sure doesn't keep the doors open.

There are companies who have smaller order amounts, but their prices may be
a bit higher. Hosfelt is a decent company, at least they were for me. Super
fast service, low order totals, shipping is like $6 for most. Decent prices
...... Mouser is another. But it's been a while since I ordered from them,
not sure on shipping or minimums anymore.

Radio shack has been my fill in the gap store for when I "don't" need a
large order. Other than that, my check is in the mail to someone. With the
price of gas anymore, it's just as cheap to order by mail than run around
"hoping" to find the parts you need.

If you get to go to any hamfests, look up some parts specials there. Stock
up! Tax free - usually. May have to spend $5 to get in, gas to get there,
and food if you can't resist.... Bottom line, no free lunch. That part will
cost you more than .39 cents in the end.
