BC547 or 2N2222 should work for general purpose work.

BC547 or 2N2222 should work for general purpose work.
The BC547 has a bit more gain, and the reverse pinout, but should work
okay. The 2N2222 is a metal case TO-18 with the different pinout, and
is a bit higher power. The 2N4124 it almost the same, except the max
collector voltage is only 25VDC.

But it seems to me that using the 2N3904 is the best idea, because
they're as common as dog doo-doo.
 
If you do an Ebay search there are currently quite a few 2N3904 transistors
available for an exact replacement.
