EEPROM question

I was looking for some EEPROMS, and was wondering what the difference
is that would drive some, although spec'ed similarly, to be so
different in price?

For instance, I was looking for the following EEPROM's on Digikey:

IC SERIAL EEPROM SPI 8K X 8 8DIP

One by Atmel (PN: AT25640-10PI-1.8) was $8.71, while one by Microchip
Technologies (PN: 25LC640-I/P) was $1.08! And the $8.71 had a slower
speed?! What gives? Both were for a quantity of "1"...

What's the big difference?

I think the price difference comes from the original suppliers.

Some parts comes directly from the factories through a distributor
channel. You have to pay for the profit of intermediaries.

Some parts are cheaper because they come from Excess Inventory. They are
discounted. But the parts are the same mecanic and electric
