DVD Ripoff!!!

Well I like to make few comments re prices on DVD's etc ..

I bought my DVD player (pioneer) when they were over $1000+ and DVD
titles were about 10 in any store ... the prices of DVD's were $30+ and
always more expensive than any VHS tapes .. now year laters ..plenty of
titles (even though some are 6 moths behind their first appearance in
US) ..you can buy a DVD player for as low as $50 ..But funny how the
prices of DVD's are still $30 or so ..

Does it cost that much to make them? less than a $1 for the blank and
maybe a $1 or so for the case ..where is the rest of the cost?

I get bevildered when you go to a store and a VHS tape of the same
movies costs less than the DVD... and somehow I am sure the process of
making that tape is more in cost than a DVD... and now the excuse cannot
be that the volume makes VHS tapes cheaper..

so who is pocketing all this HUUUGE difference in price by the time it
comes to your home..It certanly is not the technology? ..Press of a
button and the lates DIGITAL version of any movie can be in your home
for less than few minutes..(well depends what connection you have
...another rip off)

I believe people that travel overses in asian counrties get pireted
copies for less than $2.50AU ..so if these pirates can make profit on
these ..where is the COST of the OFFICIAL sellers.

sure I do acknowledge royalties ,distribution, sellers etc profits ..BUT
come on ... be a bit reasonable and do not make people so stupid ...
make your royalties, cover your costs ..but don't ripoff people..

I am sure if the price were half or less ..the volume of the movie sales
would hugely increase + the piracy etc would reduce .. No wonder some
STUPID people resort to copying them ..

Also relese and region crap ..does it take 6 MONTHS for the electrons to
swin from US to AUSTRALIA .. HEY Movie makes ... IT IS 2004 not 1700's
....we do not use dingies and sail ships to float down ..there is things
called the sattelites and cables ..try using them instead ... they work
a lot faster ...

I feel better now ..

** What is the price of a cow these days ?? Not many folk know or need
to since milk is sold in bottles for a $1.50 a litre or so.

Does the analogy need to be spelt out ???

Does it cost that much to make them? less than a $1 for the blank and

** If DVDs sold for only a couple of dollars then rental shops would be out
of business and film companies soon go broke.

I get bevildered when you go to a store and a VHS tape of the same

** The DVD has more material on it and far higher quality - you get what
you pay for.

so who is pocketing all this HUUUGE difference in price by the time it

** There is no huge amount of money being made - tapes and DVDs are not
huge selling items as most folk rent them.

It certanly is not the technology? ..Press of a

** These people are not paying any money to the movie makers and live in a
country where the cost of living is a tiny fraction what it is in the
western world.

sure I do acknowledge royalties ,distribution, sellers etc profits ..

** Like hell you do.

I am sure if the price were half or less ..the volume of the movie sales

That would be the end of the cinema business.

I got a dvd player simply because a friend wanted to upgrade his, and
wanted to sell me his old one at a very good price.
I consider myself a movie buff, love old and new movies, but no way
known am I interested in paying the prices they want for dvd movies in
the stores. I still go through the vhs shelves. I guess I'm a dinosaur.
I know the digital quality is far superiour, but I can't see a great
difference with my eysight. :)

BTW there is an interesting Microcontroller product on the New Inventors
called Microbric at 8 PM Wednesday night, ABC Channel 2.

DVDs can be had for as little as $5. New releases are $30, but quickly drop
to at least $15-$20. I don't see a problem with it at all - Australia is
far cheaper than the US for DVDs.

Nothing like a good rant to make you feel better eh ? |-)

I bought my DVD player (pioneer) when they were over $1000+
and DVD titles were about 10 in any store ... the prices of DVD's
were $30+ and always more expensive than any VHS tapes .. now
year laters ..plenty of titles (even though some are 6 moths behind

Media has always been like that, with CDs too.

Does it cost that much to make them? less than a $1 for the blank
and maybe a $1 or so for the case ..where is the rest of the cost?
Basically the rest is mostly profit for the copyright
owner and the manufacturer of the DVD.

Thats just as true of CDs too.

I get bevildered when you go to a store and a VHS tape of the same
movies costs less than the DVD... and somehow I am sure the process
of making that tape is more in cost than a DVD... and now the excuse
cannot be that the volume makes VHS tapes cheaper..
Yeah, its basically because they wouldnt sell many in
VHS format if they did price them at the same price for the
copyrighted material with a higher price for the hardware.

so who is pocketing all this HUUUGE difference
in price by the time it comes to your home..
Mostly the manufacturer but also the copyright owner.

Movies aint cheap to make.

It certanly is not the technology? ..Press of a
button and the lates DIGITAL version of any movie
can be in your home for less than few minutes..
Sure, and true in spades with CDs.

(well depends what connection you have ..another rip off)
Nope, mine is much better value than dialup was.

I believe people that travel overses in asian counrties get
pireted copies for less than $2.50AU ..so if these pirates can
make profit on these ..where is the COST of the OFFICIAL sellers.
See above.

sure I do acknowledge royalties ,distribution, sellers etc profits ..
BUT come on ... be a bit reasonable and do not make people so stupid ...
make your royalties, cover your costs ..but don't ripoff people..
I doubt the price makes much difference. If you're gunna use the pirate
copys, you'll do that even if the legal copys were say $15 instead.

So they basically flog the legal copys at a price that they have
decided will produce the maximum total income. Harder to say
if they have got that right, but they probably have.

I am sure if the price were half or less ..the
volume of the movie sales would hugely increase
I doubt it.

+ the piracy etc would reduce ..
I doubt it. Why pay $15 for what you can get for free or close ?

No wonder some STUPID people resort to copying them ..

Also relese and region crap ..does it take 6 MONTHS
for the electrons to swin from US to AUSTRALIA ..
HEY Movie makes ... IT IS 2004 not 1700's ...
They didnt have any electrons then. Or movies either.

we do not use dingies and sail ships to float down ..
there is things called the sattelites and cables ..
try using them instead ... they work a lot faster ...

I feel better now ..
Pity about the steam pouring out of your ears tho |-)

yep part of my email address ...

** Release DVDs of all new movies world wide and simultaneously ??
That would be the end of the cinema business.
maybe it will ... but also it will STOP PIRACY ..if it comes out in US
and here @ the same time ..why bother getting one from overses when you
can see it here now ... The argument that some how it should be shown
around the world in some sequence is utter crap ..it is purely money
making .and no technological feat involved .. (well maybe their
ancient distribution carriers ..boats .. are the reason)
been to cinemas lately .. take two people .. then again for the SAME
money go and buy a DVD (@ highly inflated price of course) ..and watch
it at home ..much better investment.. at lest you get to watvh it few
times ..

** What is the price of a cow these days ?? Not many folk know or need
to since milk is sold in bottles for a $1.50 a litre or so.

Does the analogy need to be spelt out ???
Not sure what you getting @ ..but OK on Milk ..I reckon it be on par
with the cost of a DVD .. somehow I see no milk sold @ $30 a bottle
even with royalties ..

** If DVDs sold for only a couple of dollars then rental shops would
be out
of business and film companies soon go broke.
Aghh crap ... why not sell them say $10 ... 1/3 off the price ..the cost
of piracy will not be worth it ..the increased volume sales will
counteract any big markup loss. same goes for your Cinema entry fee...

** The DVD has more material on it and far higher quality - you get
what
you pay for.
well I hope so ..the technology allows it .. and not the royalty,
distributors etc that make that happen!

** There is no huge amount of money being made - tapes and DVDs
are not
huge selling items as most folk rent them.
well maybe if they drop the price a tinge like half or 2/3 they will
...dahhh

It certanly is not the technology? ..Press of a
button and the lates DIGITAL version of any movie can be in your home
for less than few minutes..(well depends what connection you have

** Sounds illegal.
I was talking of ABILITY to DISTRIBUTE, the TECHNOLOGY to be able to do
it. Your local Cinema or DVD store could have a copy as soon as they are
released..They talked about BOOKs and normal CD's being distributed and
sold like that ..even to your own computer,WHY NOT ..as long as you pay
for it ..download the lates released movies and watch them. I assume
you rather like to wait for the boat to arrive with 8mm film in 3-4
months time ..

** These people are not paying any money to the movie makers and
live in a
country where the cost of living is a tiny fraction what it is in the
western world.
well these are The STUPED people I was refering too .. but are they that
stupid .. or are we the ones ,...paying exorbitant prices .. well what
is your solution to stop them? while the HUGE margin is there they will
continue to do it ...

** Funny how fools always say they are "sure" about matters they really
haven't got the faintest inkling of.

No wonder some STUPID people resort to copying them ..
