Hello,
I'm looking for a little direction for a project. The workflow is
pretty straight forward. I have a pneumatic cylinder with 2 hall effect
switches. The order of events need to be as follows.
1.)trigger cylinder to extend
2.)start timer with switch A
3.) stop timer with switch B
4.)pause ~10 sec & output time
5.)trigger cylinder to retract
6.) start timer with switch B
7.) stop timer with switch A
8.) output time

The interval between switch A&B will be 2-10 sec and I would like it to
be accurate to .01s or better. In its simplist form I could trigger the
cylinder manually and read the output off of a array of 7 seg displays.
Idealy I would like to beable to output them to a .txt file on a pc so
I can import them into excel to beable to graph the output.

Now onto my questions.

I think I can handle the simple approach with a 555>counter>7 seg
driver, but I haven't been able to find anything reguarding the
accuracy of this method.

I've also though of interfacing though the parallel port of a pc and
doing all the functions via software, but I've seen alot of concerns
over accuracy of the clock in pc.

Yes, the clock stinks, only 18 increments a second, however you could time your
'waiting for the other switch to be made routine' for a long time, maybe a
million iterations, then find the time that took, and divide by iterations,
then simply keep track of the number of loops you go though waiting for the
switch. I've used this approach since the PC was made and it works very well.
Since you only need a .1 second accuracy this approach would work great, plus
you write your file directly from the program.

This is an easy job for a simple micro to do.

This would be very hard to do with a 555.

I've also though of interfacing though the parallel port
No no no! use a serial port.

Allmost any micro will do this with very little effort, choose whatever
chip/language that takes your fancy.

Hey, look: http://www.machinadynamica.com/machina29.htm

They sell effective paperweights for your speaker cables. These'll be

Looks great.
Mine are moving from the magnetic force of the induced fields.

The fact that you are writing a paper and that papers require
references is irrelevant. The fact remains that the basic
assumption behind your paper (that ultrapure water with no
dissolved gasses is something that one is likely to find as
a contaminant of standard electrical equipment) is flawed.

I suggest that you write a paper analysing what happens when
boysenberry jam contaminates electrical equipment. That would
be far more likely, and the jam would stay jam long enough
for you to take a resistivity measurement.

You seem determined to ignore the above advice. Care to tell
us why?

Quoting Daniel,

"Your government is just too damn stupid. Who would dare to cooperate
with a bunch of erratically lying lunatics lead by a ex-drug
addict..."

Ex-drug addict? Where in the hell did you get that hare-brained idea?
"W" had a drinking problem, recognized it at an early age, and quit
drinking altogether.
Drinking is a drug problem. An alcoholic is a drug addict with alcohol
being the drug. Getting rid of the drug problem makes the drug addict an
ex-drug addict.

..."converted to religious fundamentalism? One government that did so
was already voted out of office (Spain), let's see who follows."

The people of Spain are yellow, plain and simple. Throw a bomb and
they fold.
No. Their government tried to sell the 3/11 attack as ETA's doing --
hoping to instill some ETA fear in the Spanish population which has always
been a good boost for the popularity of the right-wingers. I.e., the
government lied about the background of a national catastrophe to get
re-elected. And deservedly got booted out.

Would they have got re-elected if they hadn't tried this stunt? Probably
not because 80% of all Spainards were against the Iraq war to begin with.

Throw us a bomb and we just get mad... we don't cower like EuroPeons.
Yeah, you start throwing bombs back a thousand times, and where does it
get you? Al-Quaida stronger than ever, bin Laden roaming free, and the
Iraq (which didn't have to do with any bombs thrown at the US, and didn't
have any to throw), courtesy of the US, finally turned into the terrorist
training camp the US had always tried to make it out as.

I think the main reason we haven't seen another terrorist act in the
USA is that the terrorists know full well that the result would be the
whole USA becoming a cohesive (and killer) unit. Think WWII.
I disagree. Attacks of the 9/11 scale, in foreign countries, require years
of clandestine, minute preparation. It's just not something you can pull
off in a week if you feel like it. Although we haven't seen any new attack
on US soil (yet), we can be sure that the number of people who'd be
willing to commit terrorist acts and give their lives for it has
increased, not decreased since the Afghanistan and Iraq raid.

As far as WWII is concerned -- the US wasn't much of a killer unit then.
They just dabbled in the war pretty late just to secure some stakes in
Europe. WWII was mainly won by the Soviets (with tremendous losses), with
some help from the British.

But the main problem withe the "war on terror", like the "war on drugs",
is that you don't know whom to attack. Nuke every Islamistic country on
Earth and you'll have the entire remaining world against you. Nuke them,
too, and enjoy peace in nuclear winter. Is that how you would solve the
problem?

The "War on terror" is just a marketing buzz word conjured up by a
clueless gang of leaders. There's no concept behind it, as has been
thoroughly demonstrated in the past couple of years.

The Dream Machine
My dream machine would consist of a workststion with a full color 19"
flat panel display with a megapixel resolution. This panel could be
tilted and moved to mamy positions., yet would telescope neatly away in
to the desk when not in use. The processor unit, tucked away in desk
drawer, would be no longer than a shoebox, but would have the power of
a VAX 8600. It would be linked via fiber optic cable to a large
external database that would contain software, periodicals,
films, reference materials, books, educational and instructional videos,
and other information for which there was a demand. Multiple windows
would allow several teleconference sites to be displayed in real time,
while applications programs, say a spreadsheet and database, were
running in other windows. Input would bew by voice recognition,
wireless mouse, or keyboard.
The Dream Machine would be able to run 99% of all software ever
written and would become an industry standard. Capable of displaying
broadcast quality, real time video in as many as eight windows, the
dream machine would be more picture and motion oriented than today's
machines that tend to produce static displays of text and pixels. For
example, an architect could view a conceptual drawing of a building in
one window while incorporating changes to the blueprints in another
window. These changes would be instantly incorporated in to the
conceptual picture, showing how these changes affect the appearance of
the building.
The Dream Machine would be able to receive and record data at a very
high speed on the removable 3.5 in laser disk. For instance, one could
record a 30 second educational video in 30 seconds by using the fiber
optic link and digital compression. Data transfers such as this could
take place in "off peak" hours for viewing at a later time.
A home version would have a 40" "hang on the wall" display and be
networked to the office unit, but it would have access to cable TV and
recreational software. Video tapes would become obsolete as all
released films and television shows would be available through the
database. Windowing capability would enable the user to monitor
several sporting events while teleconferencing with a friend in one of
the other available windows.
A machine such as this should satisfy almost everyone's need for data
processing, information retrieval, communications, and home
entertainment.

Thanks for the replies, you have pretty much confirmed my suspisions
that it would be best to do this with a micro. The problem is I have
no expeience with them although it is something I'm wanting to learn.
Can you reccomend any resources on the web or other wise that can get
me started? Can you reccommend any components? Sorry about asking for
you to hold my hand on this and thanks again for the help this is a
great group and I have already learned alot on here.
