Have you ever tried a common mode transformer (as used in mains
sections of power supplies)? Together with a capacitor these give a
lot of attenuation of high frequency components and are way more
effective than a choke.

ways to appreciate it.

But, yeah. I'll go along: they both boil down to anything
moving through space exhibits chaotic behavior.

But they both stumble when trying to cross the pons asinorum
of 'the butterfly effect'.

I think most people agree, well some of most would.

That a computer model, perturbed by the least significant
digit of change in initial conditions, produced wildly different
results only proves one thing: The computer model isn't any
good at all at long range forecasting. But we knew that already.

The weather is chaotic and is therefore bounded. July snow on
the sheep meadow is outside of those bounds.

To me the 'butterfly incident' (as there is no effect outside of
the computer) shows that the computer model did not take chaos
into account.

Hmmm, I don't get it: there is no wiki definition of unpredictability,
so the article comparing the two sort of falls flat.

Noise -> Random -> Unpredictable -- To me they are all the same, just
on different human scales: Noise - ignore it; Random - yeah, well,
don't bet the farm but no big deal; Unpredictable - what the ^%*%^#?.

What is a big unpredictable thing on Earth is undetectable noise on
Alpha Centuri.

P.S.: Regarding all this talk about 'randomness,' Is it possible that
the concept you really are searching for is maybe 'noise' instead?

Yes: noise, quantum noise, seems to be at the root of all non-causality.
Or, maybe better, noise is what is at the root of all non-causality,
as one doesn't have to change the definition if quantum theory turns
out to be bunk.

Problem I have had is that the word 'noise' doesn't mean 'random' to most
people, it means 'objectionable sound'.

Hey. I actually used to stop and ask for directions. I gave up
when it turned out that you can ask six different people and get
six different answers. In the LA County boondocks, it's made harder
by the fact that so few people even speak English.

Few slaveowners let their slaves walk away. Freedom and liberty have
been attained at the cost of blood by men of wisdom and courage who can

No, actually Rich is quite right. W2K installs special drivers for
a few things as mundane as IDE controllers, instead of using generic
drivers like previous versions of Windoze. It won't boot if it has
the wrong ones for the m/board the disk is attached to. You've
probably just been lucky.

No doubt made more difficult when one works at home. At work
we have ten restaurants plus a mall with a 20-vendor food court
no more than two blocks away. Yet I often end up having lunch
from the vending machine. Granola bar and diet coke. At 3pm.

has been difficult to accomplish, with forecasted expenses the
government gave us that come in well over $50,000. For my project we
are going to take two Cold War era civil defense sirens and install
them in a small rural community in Arizona north of Phoenix called Mesa
Del Caballo which is near Payson Arizona, just for a reference point
for anyone who is actually from Arizona. This is a small mountain
community surrounded by the forest. Arizona has been going through a
massive drought over the past years, and as a result, combined with the
disastrous effects of the devastating bark beetle, our forests have
been highly susceptible as of late to pernicious wild fires. My goal is
to set up these two sirens in this community, one on one end, one on
the other, such that if there ever were a forest fire, or other
disaster which required a quick evacuation, the entire town could be
alerted via these sirens which would span all distance and language
barriers.

The government has been extraordinarily helpful to my project so
far by letting us borrow two civil defense sirens each valued at
roughly $25,000. Just to clear up a misconception we can only borrow
the sirens per regulations that were set up before the Cold War when
the sirens were originally installed throughout most of the greater
Phoenix Arizona area. The sirens we are "borrowing" for the project
should never need to be returned, it was just part of the original
contract in case of an extreme unpredictable emergency.

The problem we have run into is that we now have two Cold War era
civil defense sirens, but we don't have the money required to install
them. The representative from the Arizona Government estimated the
actual installation to be somewhere around $75,000. Our estimates upon
further investigation show it to be a smaller figure, but nevertheless
still a massively large amount. The two parts we stand in need of right
now are two 220 volt 50hp phase converters to go from 1 phase to 3
phase. These would be tax deductible, and we can provide proof of their
purpose for this project upon request. We are looking for a spare 50hp
phase converter that can be donated to our project. It does not need to
be new, used or surplus is absolutely fine. The exact specifications of
the civil defense siren are below:

We are starting off with a 220 volt, 200 amp, 1 phase line.
The siren we seek to power has three separate motors.
Motor 1 is a 7hp
Motor 2 is a 4.5hp
Motor 3 is a 1.5hp
RLA is 89amps, 220 volt, 3 phase

I was told by a specialist per these specifications that we needed
a 50hp phase converter. If anyone has a spare they can donate or knows
of a possibility for a donation, or can point us in the right
direction, or has any other helpful information for the project we
would deeply appreciate every little thing we can get at this point!

Can you not just use a transformer ? Most of us don't have them but
Universities and Power companies do. Maybe you can get a consultant
to the group from the local power company.

But only for non-profit uses. I just bought Eagle and it's not expensive.

The regular copy of their limited 'Light Version' is just $49 plus
shipping and tax in the US, I believe a wee bit more in Europe. Pretty
good for what you can do with it. Also, when buying a license you get a
nice handbook which is much easier than fumbling through a huge pdf
file. Well, I guess you could print it out but that'll consume quite
some money for toner or ink.

OK, I was only pointing out that Easy PC's demo program is useless for doing

any real work, while Eagles is not.

I used to hate Eagle because it wouldn't do things it should like make print
outs, but I have a few clients that use it so I'm stuck. The latest versions
are pretty damn good though. I like Easy PC better though and it is also pretty
cheap for a basic set of tools.

The counter-argument to this - and I don't say I subscribe to it - is
that the economy of the entire country runs on tourist dollars. Unless
the resorts are rebuilt, people will starve as soon as the "disaster
aid" runs out. Or, they will take to other pursuits such as narcotics
cultivation, which is said to translate directly into increased street
crime in first-world countries.
