John, could YOU tell when it would have been 3/4 of the paper cup full just
by sight and without measuring it? Even though a paper cup in a cafe is
supposed to be the 12-oz size, a lot of them aren't really 12 ounces. What
if it had been 14 ounces if filled all the way to the top? Then what would
you have done? I agree that the girl probably just wasn't very bright. But

Rich, that's a good story but what was the poor girl supposed to do? Make
a rough guess as to when it was 7 ounces of hot water? That would be
pretty tough even for me, unless you have the little lines on the side of
the cup. A lot of people can't just "eyeball" a certain amount of ounces
in a paper cup. How do you know how wide the cup is?

Keyword: "about".
It means approximately. The information "It's a 12 oz. paper cup" was
redundant.
3/4 * 12 = 9.
Paper cups are usually a section of a cone with the small end closed,
although
for drinking cold water in small quantities the small end diameter is often
zero.

I thought he only mentioned "12 oz paper cup" once, but even so.
Obviously he didn't expect the girl to measure it. But what if the cup was
actually more than 12 ounces? What if it held 14 ounces, even though it was
assumed to hold 12? Would you end up with the cup being under-filled? Why
not just order a "medium" and hope that it was close to the 7 ounce mark
that Rich was hoping to get?

I have very good size and volume instincts. I can tell fairly

I think both Rich and the girl assumed the paper cup was only12 ounces. If
unbeknownst to them the cup was actually 14 or 15 ounces, he'd have to ask
for her to fill it with more water to get the same results. In that case if
he'd asked for 5/8ths full I would not have expected her to get it right. I
would be surprised if she did.

I'm not saying that it was smart timing, but for the Repubs to claim
that they voted against it because their widdle feelings were hurt is
simply juvenile.

She adbicated a national leadership position for partisan

I agree that the timing for that statement was poor.

It was a very
hard sell to conservatives already.

And to many liberals as well.

If she brings down the US economy,
millions will suffer and many will die.

Again, you're stating that if the US economy comes down, it's because
the Speaker insulted some people. Are you sure that this is a position
you want to stick with?

Yup. Wars have be fought over misunderstandings, pride, and loss of
face. "Little" things like this can matter.

John
OK. Got it. The House Republicans are willing to vote for the bill in
order to save the country from the agony of the national economy taking.
Then some mean things were said to them, and they are no longer willing
to vote for the bill that would save the economy. Obviously, saving the
economy is less important to House Republicans than having their
feelings hurt. I urge you guys to run with that.

Obviously, the real news here is Bush and McCain being thrown under the
bus by the House Republicans.

Wheher it's an EPS plastic cup or a paper cup, it would be a very good
approximation to assume that the inner (liquid filled) volume of the
cup was a circular frustum, so I guess you could solve for the correct
ratio of perpendicular fill heights, but the algebra might be a bit
messy (a rare opportunity to use the closed form cubic solution,
maybe?). The actual draft angle isn't usually that much so eyeballing
would be close enough.

Maybe it would be easier if she filled three cups to the normal level,
and then divided the total amount into four equal portions using a
fourth empty cup, then discarded the left-over quarter and then
combined the contents of the remaining three into one of the cups. ;-)
I'm not trying to be argumentative and I don't want to drag this thread out
unnecessarily. But originally he wanted the 12-oz cup to be about 3/4 full.
How could he expect a normal everyday waitress to judge and stop filling it

Thank you, Androcles, but I have been tasked with coordinating the threads
on rec.gambling.poker and I try my best. I'm not even being paid for this.
Our group started out many years ago as mostly discussions about poker. But
as you can see it has blossomed into a place where we have many off-topic
threads and especially some very interesting and insightful political
discussions. When I first started coordinating the threads it was right
after the 2004 upgrade. The group was much more manageable. Until that
time the senior coordinator had been doing much of the work by himself.
Please check your Profile, Androcles, check to see if the confirmation
number is in the box in the upper righthand corner, or if it is grayed out.
I have to go to my real job soon and I will try to straighten some things
out here when I get home. Obviously we have a sudden surge in the traffic
on rec.gambling.poker. That is a good thing! I just want to see that it
gets done right. I take pride in how I have coordinated this group even
though I don't get paid for it and sometimes it seems thankless.

Thank you, Androcles, and have a good day, I'll check in from work later.

Best regards,
-Paul Popinjay
Asst. Coordinator, Rec.Gambling.Poker
