Actually this might be caused by a virus called sobig. It scans
peoples email addres lists and then starts sending out emails in other
peoples names. Pople have even found sobig suscribing them to mailing
lists and randomly sending out emails to anyone and everyone on the
internet including newsgroups. It doesn't even need to infect your
computer, it can infect someone elses computer, get your email
address, then starts sending out emails using your email address.
sobig even has email subroutines in it.
