Used to be--the late lamented TIL300, which was discontinued a
year or so ago.  (http://focus.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/til300.pdf)

Nowadays you\'re better off using PWM--it\'s way more predictable.

I don\'t have control of the source side... I need isolation, no more
than 10uA IQ.

No sure what you want to do here but there are plenty of LED -> dual
photodiode versions for doing the feedback thing, like this one:

http://www.avagotech.com/docs/AV02-0886EN

Thanks, Joerg--I didn\'t know about those ones.  TI has got completely
out of the opto business, it looks like, and sometimes a linear
photocoupler is just the right medicine.

That might be just the ticket, since I tried this already...

Pretty puny performance, even when praying that the 4N25 model is
adequate ;-)

Phil, Your \"PUT\" idea is intriguing, though I\'d need two for
_polarity_, unless you have another clever idea ;-)

                                        ...Jim Thompson

Of course you\'d need an isolated power supply to be able to apply
feedback to the optocoupler...those aren\'t the same as a dual matched
opto, where you can invert the transfer curve on the LV side using an op
amp.

I\'d be inclined to put the PUT device inside a bridge rectifier made
from two optos and two diodes, so you can get the polarity and the
current as well.  (That\'s a variant of Pease\'s trick with the voltage
reference inside the bridge rectifier.)  If you\'re brave you can save
one photocoupler, but I\'d prefer to subtract the two photocurrents on
the left side to get a more reliable polarity indication.

Somebody doesn\'t put part numbers on his pencil-sketched devices. This might be a whine, if I thought that John Larkin had real parts in mind when he scribbled his sketches. No doubt he relies on his subordinates to fill in the petty details, so it is more of a cluck.

unapproved ideas.

Psychology is important, key to design. It is interesting to see how
people react to ideas, and even to suggestions of possibility.

It\'s not important. It\'s just a newsgroup.

I have ideas, and a lot of people here are instantly hostile to unapproved ideas.

Actually they are hostile to bad and silly ideas, and that does cover most of the \"ideas\" you post here.

\"Unapproved\" isn\'t a a categorisation you can apply to novel ideas - if they really are new (and most of yours aren\'t) there\'s no way that they could have got approved in advance.

And if you are hungry for flattery, you are frequently disappointed.

As opposed to a group assembled to flatter John Larkin, but he keeps on hoping.

That\'s all John Doe is equipped to perceive. And he deserves every last one he gets.

I\'m not worried by bad or silly ideas, and I\'ve encouraged
my daughter to come up with them.

I am irritated/annoyed/dismayed if they are repeated after
their inadequacies have been demonstrated/discussed.
