Circuit simulator for IRIX

Is there any circuit simulator program for IRIX, like PSpice on the
Windows PC?

i never heard of one. but maybe there are from free alternatives to
Pspice, or Hspice.
i know there are a lot of bad free cad tools out there

Easy Greg . . . there are currently some penguin fetishists over in
C.S.S.M. attemting to lynch hamei as we speak in "Another one bites the
dust". Heaven forbid they come after you too for accosting their beloved
OS (if you wanna call it an OS).

i did, it's the standard!
seriously i've looked at free CAE tools since the early 90's only one thing
came close to being interesting, and that was an oberon design system built
to program a xilinx 6200? it didn't go anywhere. all in all it proves the
ultimate maximums:

1) a hardware guy always sees a hardware solution to a problem, and the
software shoulkd be easy
2) a software guy always sees a software solution to a problem, and the
hardware should be off the shelf.
3) a hardware guy can't write software (or so says the to a software guy,
not realizing we write software all the time)
4) a software guy can't design hardware (period).

I am not a SGI IRIX user, but at least for PC there are a lot of good free/GNU
electronics CAD tools out.

There could be a build of gEDA, or NG-Spice, for IRIX?

But since SGI machines are used in high-end applications, I think the 'big
guys' expect that you have the $$$$$$$$$ to buy professional software.

I can't guarantee that the've been built on IRIX, but the classic
F/OSS tools for circuit-level simulation and board design are gEDA for
schematic capture/netlisting:

Ngspice for simulation:

(as of 8.29.2004 grab version 15fixedRC2). And PCB for board layout:

http://pcb.sourceforge.net/

You should be able to build these packages from source without too
much trouble, ***IF*** you have the GNU include libraries installed,
and make sure that they show up first on the search path when doing
your configure/build. If you rely upon the native IRIX include files
you may end up in dependency hell. Then again, you may not. It's
worth a try, because the tools are freely available for download.

compared to the overall project costs. 'free' software, doesn't address support
requirements. I would hate to have my ASIC schedule depend on USENET posts to
questions.

I gotta take issue with this. When my copy of Orcad Capture 10i
segfaulted when doing a <ctrl>-C <ctrl>-V copy paste operation on
text, EDM-EDA's customer service reps could only take my call and give
me sympathy. *I* gave them the workaround (do a <ctrl>-mouse drag)
which they relayed to their other customers. In other words, their
customer service knew less than I did, and couldn't think of a
workaround which I -- as a short time customer -- found within 20ms.

(To be fair, they have apparently fixed the problem with the code
since version 10i.)

On the other hand, when I have a problem with LTSpice, I post a
question either here or via e-mail, and Mike gets back to me within a
day, almost always with a useful fix, and always with an intelligent
analysis of my problem.

More generally, if MS Word does something bad, does Microsoft really
offer real support at retail level? Anybody who has waited on hold
for upwards of an hour, only to talk to some poor slob from India who
reads his answers off a laminated sheet knows the answer to that.

Therefore, the purported advantages of support don't apply for low-end
software. I suppose that if I'm spending $100,000 for a seat of some
Cadence stuff, then the apps engineer will actually take my call and
make a few inquiries around the lab. However, for low-end EDA
software, the support you get is as bad as the support you get from
any retail supplier. And the original poster was asking about
retail-level software (i.e. PSpice).

As for F/OSS, several mailing lists exist for getting support, as well
as Usenet. The support levels I have seen have been good, although
the questions asked are often fairly amateurish. Personally, I have
supported folks having problems with ngspice, gattrib, garchive, and
some other gEDA programs. If you are looking for commercial support
for F/OSS EDA software, compaines like Electroniscript have been
formed. Do a Google search -- find the facts before you post your
predjudices.

But IMHO, open-source software has good documentation.

Even more so, since you can 'cheat' and look at the code.

I am sick of commercial programs that 'kick you in the face' with an illegal
operation.

I will try to make this tomorrow (the SGI computer is at work) under
IRIX, but I am IRIX newbie, but I have some good experience with Linux
so I think it's not that hard.

PSpice. At least for Windows, and in the older versions.

i never used pspice or windows.

Since I never used a SGI, I don't know if PSpice exists for IRIX.

i never used sgi for EDA. only sun.

what we have is a classic apples and oranges argument (hey, it _IS_ usenet)
i therefore have other things to do (schedule, schedule, schedule).

When the goings really get tough most F/OSS designers rise their hands
and say "sorry it is not my problem". When you can't nail them on a
support contract, there is nothing you can do over email or usenet to
make them fix their errors.

Cadence is not the cheapest, nor the easiest EDA suite, but they do have
application engineers and support hotline that at least try to take the
end user problem seriously.

Why would somebody run EDA on IRIX? Thought IRIX was more a MPP
numbercruncher for meteorolgy, mechanical cad etc.
